What welding rods do you stick welders use? For all purpose or what do you use for certain tasks? At work we use mainly 7018 for structural applications, sometimes 7014. We got a new guy and he prefers 6011. Says it is a penetrating rod, I have never used them myself. When I get ready to make a bumper for my xj I want to use what is ideal, and if its something I'm not used to, want to get a few rods burned so I can make it look good.

I'm also going to be doing box steel rockers and building a utility trailer soon. Seems like the stick on sheet metal is going to be a challenge.

for bumpers I would go with the 7018. If you have large gaps to fill root fill with the 6010/6011 then pass over with the 7018.

I can usually weld gaps good with 7018s, just have to use a lot of rods. My partner at work tried some 6011s last week and they looked like shit. He said it felt like it was welding good but then he looked at it and was like wtf. I think I am going to stick with 7018s because i am comfortable with them and I can make it look good. I wish I had access to a mig since that's what I am really at home with.

For AWS pipe welding on carbon steel, we use.......
1/8" e6010 5p plus for the root pass.
3/32" e7018 for the hot pass and cap.
75 to 80 amps.
