Hello,

I'm a new Jeep owner, I just purchased a 95 Jeep YJ 4.0. I'm also new to 4x4'ing and I have a question.

I want to put a 4" lift and 33" tires on my jeep, but I am worried that I will run into problems because I have the stock 3.55 rear on my Jeep. Will this be a big issue or not to bad? I'm not planning on doing any serious offroading, just lite stuff for fun. My main concern is on the road drivability.

Thanks for the help,

You should be ok with that gearing. That is what I run....in my opinion it works good for off road without over-revving engine on hwy.
The only issue I had, before I installed V8, was with long hwy inclines with the 6-cyl.

the gearing should be OK, as long as you have an overdrive transmission. I'd be more worried about the stock rear end, being a Dana35, its not known for durabilty...mall crawling on bigger tires seems to be its limit.

Just throwing this out there, I think I saw someone with a '99 XJ geared stock (3.55)8.25 for sale for like $100 in the for sale forum.

I don't know YJs well enough to know if the spring perches match up, but if they do you could swap that in the rear and its already SOA, SOA the front and you'd have your lift plus a considerably stronger axle with the 29 spline 8.25.

Driveline issues would still be there but you'd essentially get your lift height for next to nothing.

And regarding 33s w/3.55s I dd'd my XJ for a year and a half or so and it was barely cutting it in the mtns. Flatland I think you'd be fine.

Im interested to know how this makes any sense.

I would not drive a stock size tire around on 3.55's, your overdrive will be totally useless unless your doing a 100mph

oops, brainfart. I had 33s and 3.55 gears, I was fine without OD. I then swapped in some 4.10 axles, and I found I really needed the OD, which I don't have. So I bumped to 35s :huggy:
