Same here.

An old man told me a line once I never forgot. He was an old school hotrodder and was a mentor to me when I was a teenager.

like mentioned no its not legal...and i6s sound sick (not good new kid sick, old school bad make me want to vomit sick) straight piped.
 
my $.02-swap to a performance style muffler of your preference, better flow than stock, but quiet enough not to go crazy listening to it on the highway(a cherry bomb glasspack is NOT in this category!). most street type vehicles with carbs will have better smoothness and midrange with a properly sized performance exhaust. With fuel injected vehicles it's even more so- a straight pipe tends to throw sesor readings out of range for the factory data table for fuel/air/ignition advance.
 
:lol: My '02 CTD has been straight piped for the past 10yrs. I've come to realize over the past couple years just how obscenely loud it is. Will I put a muffler back on it? Highly unlikely any time soon. There's now an exhaust brake in its place and that would require work that is out of site on the priority list.
 
Thanks guys! Right now I have a flowmaster 40 series on my jeep and I want to make it sound like a v8 without actually buying a v8 since gas is way to expensive. I am just trying to find a way to make it deeper sounding and right now the only way to do that is either buy a highflow cat or hallow the stock cat out.
 
what size exhaust pipe are you running? 2 1/4 is ok 2 1/2 is better. for catalytic converters, do a search on thunderbolt, they're cheap, flow well keep you legal and relatively easy to fit up
 
An I6 can sound pretty good. Mine was built with a 40 series and had a nice sound. What it won't do is sound like a v8. The firing order and exhaust pulse are completely different. I6 has a smooth sound as the rpms climb. V8 has more rumble.
If you already have a 40 series on it you won't gain much from the cat unless it's clogged. And you say a v8 and gas is expensive but you're talking about spending money on a new exhaust.
I would just buy gas.
 
if you 'really' want that sound:

Clifford 6=8 split 4.0 header
true dual exhaust, pick your poison on the muffler, run 2-1/4" pipe.


Now, that's probably going to run you about $1000 by the time you get the parts and have all of it worked in, but then you've got a jeep built around an exhaust system...
 
^^^^ Damn that's harsh. How about a 6 sounds like a 6 with open exhaust and a 8 sounds like a 8. A small block doesn't sound like a big block, a Ford sounds different than a Chevy, etc.
 
I've been thinking about this for a few days, and I'm genuinely curious as to what would give a 6cyl a decent sound. I'm with GotWood -- sixes aren't going to sound like eights. But our Jeep sounded similarly shitty breathing through a Flowmaster 50 both with a 4cyl, (then briefly a 3cyl), then a 6cyl. The no-name single chamber it had before that was equally crappy.

I like the Flowmaster because it's built like a tank. But it sounds like a fart can from 2000 to 2500.
 
Jeep 4.0 sounds like a long agonizing mooooooo from a dying cow when you put a flow master on them.ive owned three of them and I still laigh like hell when I hear a group of Cherokee's cruising through the woods
 
The camshaft is what makes them sound good. Its not how loud but the thump.
 
Ive got a glass pack on my jeep and I think it sounds great as do most others. No crazy tip or anything just a glass pack welded in.
