I'm at a cross roads with my rig, and I cannot decide whether to keep the full body or to go ahead and cut the top and back off and tube it while I'm doing all the other crazy stuff under it. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what is and isn't legal in NC. I want to still be able to drive around town occasionally and be able to pass inspections without too much trouble. If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.

All lights working as designed including highbeams. Aimed properly.
Side view mirrors, at least the left. Rear view mirror on inside as well.
If it has reverse lights, it can only have 2 and no "over ride switch". Must not be able to be lit in foward gears. (hide the switch) Not manditory.
Mechanical e-brake that works.
Wipers that work.
Tight front end components. No more than 3" off free play for steering wheels under 18" dia.
Windshield can not be busted in the drivers view.
Exhaust has to exit the rear or at least clear of the body. Passenger side is the only "foward of tire" exit allows.
License plate light, supposed to be visable from 50 ft, white only.
Red tail lights.
Horn, must be heard for 200 foot nor too damn loud.
Front or rear spring are noticable sagging, broke, cut, heated or removed/missing. (Hummmm, what about air shocks?)
Power steering must not leak and belt must be tight.
Turn signals must work. red or amber on rear, amber or white on front, switch has to be convienent for driver.
Can not have knots in the tires.

Thats pretty much it as long as it has the emissions stuff it came with for the year it should pass.

My junk would be legal if/when I add a mechanical e-brake and a license plate light.

Think about a dune buggy, and those can be legal... ;)

RE: dune buggies, I've seen one a few times on Capital Blvd in Raleigh. Whatever lights and stuff those need, should be the same for one like you guys weld up.

Michael (Tacoma747) used to run around in a truggy. Now its a Truggy that has bedsides mounted on the -uggy half. I think most cases you will be ok with an inspetion as long as it looked safe and you have an understanding shop?

Dune buggy's have to get a custom title though. My dad built one, the only reason they require one is because you have an engine from another car and have no title to start with on the buggy. I don't know how many changes have to take place before they require a custom title?

Not necesarily, we have inspected a dunebuggy at work that was titled as a VW. I think because the engine and some of the other mechanics were VW it could be titled as one.

But they are still subject to the same safety inspection criteria.. ;)

If all the farmers around here can pass inspection with home made flat beds with wood slat sides, a truggy should pass with flying colors.

Yes he had to have the same inspections everyone else has to have. I think your talking about the same thing I am atleast a (Sand Rail). He used a Honda civic engine trans and all -- put it in the back. He actually had to have some type of special insection on his though. He couldn't just take it to the local inspection station the first time. Someone came out and inspected it at home.

For what it's worth, when I say Truggy, I don't mean like a tube bed or anything, I'm talking about cutting the top, and entire back half of the truck off and tubing it, if that changes things at all.
