With a recent string of car break ins happening in our neighborhood lately, Wifey is wanting to set up a camera over our garage. We currently have a Ring doorbell and figure setting up a single Ring camera in conjunction with our doorbell would be the easiest. (One single app for doorbell and camera and both would alert to the same app)
Anyone have a Ring camera in addition to a doorbell?

I know I can get 2-3 cameras for the price of 1 Ring camera with certain brands, just don't want to buy any junk.

This has been hashed before, but what are you hoping to see?

all you’re going to see from a distance is a shadow figure at night and a faceless being during the day.

I know this from experience that only a close up camera will give you a useable image unless you go really high end, even that is a crap shoot
Ambient lighting plays a big role in this.

have video of the whole thing, no real detail in video either (trailer not stolen, I knew they were coming after it, neighbor did not)

later in the day, my own junk better quality but still no detail.

add street lights or porch/driveway lights and night vision gets screwed up, even with low light there is no detail unless close up

Leave a rattlesnake in the car.

What it really sounds like is you need to spend a couple nights on your roof. I've done this before, they won't be back, especially if you fire a blank or two...or even some paintballs/air soft. Or, leave your doors unlocked so you won't have to replace a window and don't leave anything of value inside the car.

We’ve had random car break ins the last few months, a few of the more vigilant neighbors did exactly that, but a got a bit carried away, pretty much anyone moving after 10pm was stopped or followed and questioned. It didn’t last long.

My neighborhood is buttoned up pretty tight too. The text strings get going the second a strange vehicle gets past the first house. I had some scope rings come in on Tuesday through Amazon. Driver was in a windowless blue van. I shit you not, by the time the Amazon guy called me to let me know he was leaving a package that was partially torn open, the retired dude next door, the stay at home mom across the street and Molly (my other neighbors black lab) were at my front stoop calling me (not the dog) to let me know a strange van was in my driveway and they knew my wife was home with the girls. As I clicked over on the calls, I could hear the Amazon guy and my neighbors echoing. Got it straightened out, all was right with the world...then my wife called me to tell me there was a strange windowless van in our driveway, so she didn’t open the door, ‘and remembered what I taught her’. It might be an HOA neighborhood, but we take care of our own. I felt bad for the Amazon guy.

That must be awesome. I cant get my people in my neighborhood to wave, much less call. Hell, I've been there 6 years and can throw rocks to houses of people I don't even know the names of.

It is...the neighborhood is made up of mostly retirees or families like mine with young kids. The retirees like having kids around to fill any grandchildren voids. The stay at home moms all seem to like eachother. And the combination of them tend to find things to do together during the day almost daily.

Look in Nextdoor see if your neighborhood is in the que, lots of gossipy nonsense sometimes but folks are watching out. Some ads, folks asking for repair or where do I get type stuff. If nothing else you kinda get the feel of the crazy around you.

My neighborhood is pretty quiet and inactive. It was disappointing to move in and discover the lack of “neighborhood” feel I was hoping for. Very few kids running around even though there is plenty, never see people outside. Most people waive, but I’m just that redneck dude that drives his trashy Jeeps thru the neighborhood often.

We do have a FB group though and if anything strange happens, there is a need, or a fundraiser, it gets used and people look out.

I've had a few conversations with amazon lately, because their drivers are in unmarked vans and park in my driveway. I scared the crap out of some poor lady sitting in her van in my driveway when I got home from work, beat on the side and told her to move. I don't get why they can't drive marked vans and park in the street like all other delivery services do.

I had Arlo (they've all since deceased thanks to volleyballs and a basketball) and I got enough video of a guy that it led to him getting caught in conjunction with other evidence. It took a lot of trial and error to position them right, especially since they're motion activated. i don't like the night vision, so I keep my driveway lights on at night and use them as a back light. I also have the cam facing north so the sun is never behind the subject. I'd think the current day Ring cam would be better than the gen1 arlos I had. I'm thinking of adding a Ring as well since we already have the doorbell.

Our street got together and bought a license plate cam and put it on the street. It works pretty good and we're on a dead end road.

Nothing meaningful to add other than...FTFM

I’m just that redneck dude that drives his trashy Toyota thru the neighborhood, slide-in camper sitting in the driveway and spare tires filling up the bed of a 78 F150 beside his neighbors house.

I can relate! I'm just waiting on the HOA to show up at my doorstep one day soon...

Until then, I'm just going to continue driving thru like...:driver::flipoff2::rockon::usa:

Well our driveway is pretty short and small and we park our cars very close to the garage and could place the camera fairly close to be able to have a pretty wide view. Even if I couldn't see the person's face, I feel having something rather than nothing or even knowing what kind of car they are driving, I'd at least have footage to share with my neighbors to hopefully have folks on alert and what to look for.

They’re useful, don’t get me wrong, but detail is something that isn’t going to happen.

Many of folk in my subdivision have Ring, there have been videos of random person walking they yard up next to house recently. Which is a good way to get taken out, the houses are 60-100ft from the road minimum, that’s not just a casual stroll.

Dude, your neighborhood is sketchy! People steal cars out of garages and crash them into the ditch :flipoff2::D

x3

I tell people coming to my house to buy Jeep parts; a) you wouldn't think we have an HOA, and b) you'll know the house when you see it, there will be no doubt.

Sort of back on track, we did have some kid come thru and 'break in' to every car that was unlocked. He had the nerve to go thru my CDs and not steal any of them. Guess he had bad taste in music. And he was dumb, because he got caught bragging about the stuff he stole (laptops, GPS, etc.).

Same in my hood. It is very cold. Hardly anybody outside. People are not very friendly and keep to themselves. I know there are 2 or 3 kids about my sons age, but they must have some rare skin condition that prevents them from going outside because I only see them about once a year. All kidding aside, I blame video games.

That's all it's good for around here.....

That's the Sub-contractors they hire, especially during Seasonal Rush/Demand. Contractors own their cars, trucks, vans, & get paid per delivery, I assume. But It Would be wise for Amazon/Prime, to provide a Sign, for them!
