Structural question with pic, cutting up the ZJ floor

So I am raising the gas tank and I need to cut out the floor to bring it up. I will gain about 8" or so and will not longer be bashing my gas tank skid. The problem is that the gas tank is 32.5" across and the unibody frame rails are 34" across, but welded to the body at about 31.5".

In the pic I have marked in red where the frame rails are welded to the body and in blue I have marked where I need to cut. Should I avoid cutting this out due to structural integrity?

Thanks for any input.

I don't have the $ for a fuel cell.

Would it be acceptable to make a skid out of 3/16's or so spanning the length of the 2 frame rails? It seems like it would serve the same function as a crossmember.

Nice bumper ..... what cool kid came up with that design?

haha good to see youre still sporting it ... well have to get up and wheel when my Disco build gets somewhat done. needs new meats now.

you might think about using something like metal bar and expanded metal for the skid...

a 3/16 plate would be stronger probly, but id hate to try and clean the mud and dirt that would store on top of it...

Just tack weld the edge every 1" or so, after you cut it to insure the floor is still attached well to the rail.

Gotta figure only thing there now are the crappy spot welds, every 2" to 3", thru that flange to the floor!

Good addition, may be to reconstruct the floor up over the new fuel tank location, again, to tie the floor all back together.
