you can pick up all the dead wood you can carry, but it better be on the ground, you get caught felling a tree and you have big problems.
and if you are operating a chainsaw in the forest, you need to have a permit and certification from the ranger station ( requires a class, a very interesting one at that ) also need to have the protective gear ( helmet, glasses, chaps )
Most times you will see that the ones operating the chainsaws on work days are the ones who have these qualifications or the Rangers themselves. BUT NOT ALWAYS.
in 2000 a group of us took the class in Early March to clear trails of trees fallen from the huge snow fall that year. Dunno IF or how long that certification lasts, I'm quite sure I am out of date by now.
