I am posting for a friend of mine. I recieveda call about a younger kid stuck with his brother at the bottom of "Dutch John" after this huge rain storm we just had today. He is driving a 2002 Land Rover Dicovery II. He has at least 1 broken rear stock axle shaft that we know of. My friend is driving down to "rescue/service" the situation.

**Anyone with any 2002 Disco II parts like rear axle shafts please call 919 603 3894 or if you live close by and can meet up at eldorado outpost or something that would be great. Thanks again everyone.

I talked with Josh and hooked him up with someone that could get him out. There was a huge down pour of rain about the time his transfer case went out, so no regular rig was going to get the 6500lb Rover up Dutch John's climb as slick as it is after the rain. I also called Larry Harell with Rover Automotive, he is also the president of CROC - (Carolina Rover Owners Club). Larry is tring to contact the guys. Larry will have club members in the area that can get Josh up and running.

What is funny, a small child wet and scared asking for help for his brother? And you call yourself junkman? Now thats funny....

6500 lb Rover...I doubt it. Its getting a little late to start a recovery but to each his own. Bring the boys home and get it in the morning.

That sux. I was just there too. But I don't think I could have pulled him all that way in the rain.
Did you see me with my U shaped tie rod this morning?

I agree there. Pitch a tent if you don't want to leave it alone.

If you don't get it out by tomorrow and I can manipulate my schedual, I can take some tools up, and a pretty long tow rope.

i saw a guy in disco with a snapped left rear axle shaft on saturday. sounds like the disco crew had some carnage on dutch john this weekend! Glad i was in the cruiser and not the disco!

IF the Croc folks are on it, it shouldnt take long. Nice folks them guy.

part of my toolkit is camping gear and extra food.

I hope the guy makes it out alright.

larry harell. what a joke. please tell me that asshole isn't the croc president now? he'll have to call a croc circle jerk and consult with that guy with the ponytail before doing anything.:flipoff2:

man, i'll bet they're all chomping at the bit to get in there and use their arb's, limb risers, and maybe even carry something in their roof rack. maybe it'll be at night too, so they can use the 12 hellas aimed at the trees. oooh!

i'm linking this to a friend of mine that i'm sure has the parts and would be willing to help, but i can assure nothing will come of it if larry/croc are involved at all.

That was my first thought.

Funniest run-in I ever had at Uwharrie was with a LR near the big mud hole. Guy is driving, wife and kids along, in a brand new LR. Pulls up to me with passenger side to me, wife rolls down her window, and pretty well demands "TELL me where the road out of here is!?!." I got the feeling hubby got a new toy, he drove the "test" course at the stealership (which most anybody here could do in a camry), and quickly got in over his head. All she wanted was out.

Last weekend I pretty much had everything broken in the rear axle on my K5 possible, stranded on the backside of Daniel. A rover club comes through and one guy was about an inch away from sliding into my K5. Not that it would've really affected my K5 much, but he would've had a big glass bill.

yeah, that would have been CROC on their annual spring run. i'm surprised any of them were brave enough to attempt daniel. sounds like they didn't even offer to help?

No. One told me that I had a broken axle shaft though, I thought that was pretty humorous being that the only thing I hadn't broken was the ring and pinion.

I thought as much as a rover costs, they would come with trailside assistance. Maybe even skycrane retreival service for when your disco breaks while off saving the starving children of your local gated community.

lol, as much as i like to bash discos... lets focus on the wheeler in need of help...and then crack on him when he and his truck is back to safety

any news on the kid whose stuck in uwharrie yet? Does anyone know him personally?

I just popped over to the CROC message board. no mention of anyone from there offering to help or asking for help (other than me..just now)

Wish I was home, would have had him out at first sign of this thread....hope things work out, I know the feeling....but ain't stupid enough to wheel alone/without a capable recovery rig (cept at Uwharrie, I'd swim home if I had to from there).

i bumped into this feller when I was leaving Sunday night. I offered to help but he continually dismissed my offer to help. Apparantly my "Border Patrol" rig didn't impress him. He thought I had no clue because I wasn't wheelin in pimp gear..

well guys. ya'll spoke too soon about Croc. Lol, they dont get along online to great....but they are nice folks.

Looks like the guy made it out.

heres the story as told by the admin of CROC's board

"Ok, here is what I know. Last night about 7pm Larry called me saying that he was going out to Uwharrie since there was kid in a DII that was stuck at the bottom of Dutch John. His car would not start AND the kid heard a loud snap before it shut down. I told him to let me know if he needed anything.

A few hours later, 10:30pm, I got a call that he got it started (thank goodness for AutoLogic) and that he had a broken axle or diff (front). Larry called Aaron who just happened to have a complete front axle assembly for a DII.

At 11pm, I drove over to Aaron's parents and picked it up in my truck and took it over to the double parking lot at Dutch John where I met Larry and Josh (the kid with the busted DII).

We stripped the axle of the Diff and axles and they took off back up the hill. I spoke with Larry this am and they got it all wrapped up about 5am.

What a night."

I find it humorous that someone called Doughboy for help with a 4wd..

I bet he was with the group of rovers, and they all just left him there, since most of their toolkits consist of a cell phone and a checkbook.

Sounds like a great bunch of guys. Despite the negative comments and Rover jokes.

x2. All of the "Rover People" I've ever had contact with on a trail were pricks. Yelling at us to "get the hell" off of Kodak so they could take a picture. Then just leaving us there when my brother's tranny took a dump on Kodak... luckly some dude in a beat XJ came up after they had left us and pulled us to the top...

Of course this was only one incident with a small group, but it is a stigma that I have...

I am glad the kid made it out ok, and it sounds cool that the rover guys helped him out.

That said, i also have a pretty negative attitude about rover drivers on the trail....... like they think no one else is good enough to be on "their" trails......... i know that isnt everyone, but i have gotten that impression from different guys more than once.
