Large pieces are already dried, the "end tables" & "outside seat" will have to dry more. Plan on staining (still debating on natural or colored stain), sealing with some coats of poly then coating the top with EX-74 Epoxy resin (like what you see on bar tops at clubs).

Frankenyoter:
End tables and outside seat are cherry and large tables are oak.

Made some progress today.

This big ole SOB's gonna take 2 days to plane.

Thats good stuff man. I made my wife a 3'x2' coffee table out of a chunk of black walnut, very similar to what you're doing here. I've got a good bit more of the black walnut, as well as about 12 feet of 4' diameter white oak that I can't decide what to do with.

Jeepinmatt: Did you use an epoxy resin on yours for the top? If so what brand & how thick did you go?

I haven't done anything with it yet. Its been sitting out about 2 months now and is starting to crack a bit. I've got a deal with the wife that she does all the finishing work, so I keep reminding her to do something, but she hasn't done anything yet.

Before you stain or clear it, I would put a sanding sealer on it. That will keep it from looking blotchy; also several coats of poly will work just fine

Gotcha, I plan on doing some test pieces for color fastness, "soak up" amount of wood, varying thickness of resin, etc...

I have no idea why that pic posted 3 times.
FYI i rented a hardwood floor sander to plane and smooth mine out

Nice. What did you clear it with? Polyurethane (oil or water based), Epoxy resin, ???

If you want to seal it, but don't want the glossy coating, use Danish Oil. It's what I'm using on my reclaimed timber counter tops at home. Brings out the grain, leaves the natural feel of wood and seals it up.

Minwax Polyurethane I bought from Lowes. I think i bought about 2 gallons sprayed it with a automotive paint sprayer ( ruined it). Seems like it was about 9 coats.

Finally got the clock finished. I've been building some nesting tables for living room (making a new build thread for them).

Used satin silver numbers & hands so it can be read easier.

Clock looks great

Very nice work sir! I just gotta make sure my wife doesn't see this or those nice end tables. I've got enough to do already.

Understandable ;) .

These are much more elaborate but my dad did something similar for end tables using donut slices from a red oak and smaller cedar trunks as legs. He just used a heavy oil (tongue maybe) on his and let it soak in and they've held up beautifully. Much more low scale if someone finds the wife nagging.
