I am looking at a torch kit on Craigslist.

It is listed as a cutting torch, but the lady when I called said it was propane? Is this something I should stay away from or?

I googled and got conflicting answers.

I have used a torch like twice, so forgive my ignorance.

I would love to have one right now to finish parting this FJ60 in my wifes garage spot before I get divorced.

Thanks!

I use propane in my torches. Works fine & is much cheaper. Make sure the torch has a 2 piece tip when you go look at it.

Well I can tell you two things. 1st you can have a propane oxygen torch. 2nd if you dont want to spend the cash on a torch I can cut it up for you. A propane oxygen torch setup is very similar to an oxy acetylene torch. Much like the oxy acyte torch it cuts very well and can be used for cutting and brazing applications. I however would steer away from the propane setup as well as a map/oxy set up. map gas or propane gas are very good but the down side is availability, you have to use a different torch and tips, more expensive for burn time to cost ratio, and they dont burn as hot as oxy acetylene. I have set ups for oxy acytelene and oxy map and oxy propane. So speaking from experince if I had to go with one or the other I would stick with oxy acetylene.

I think I'd have to disagree...

the propane/oxy or mapp/oxy is just fine and, IMO, cheaper overall. tips are similarily priced. The propane/mapp is much cheaper than accetylene. Although the propane/mapp burns less hot, its not much of a difference and not that noticeable.

I've been using mapp/oxy for the last 7 years and have oxy/acy at home and to be honest, I like/prefer the mapp. That may be because I'm used to it.

If affordable, I wouldn't think twice about getting a propane/mapp setup

Well I can see both sides. I guess price maybe a less of a factor but the availability of parts I have to say that finding tips, torch body and regulators for oxy map or propane is not as readily available every where. But if you find a good supplier of each then what do you have to lose.

Also rockcity. I have to agree that compaines that supply map gas have a good thing going. I have worked in many situations where they have a large map gas supply and a header for many cuting stations. I have not got anything against using map. Its all in what you like and get used to.
