98 XJ, The problem is that when I hit a bump the upper control arm on the passenger side will hit these damn things. I have already replace both of them not very long ago and now I have to replace yet another. Does anyone know of an aftermarket line or a way to re-route the lines? I know I could just get some upper control arms but I don't have the coin for that right now, unless someone has some on the cheap. It's an automatic and any ideas will help greatly.

Thanks.

1/4" fuel line and a couple of hose clamps. Cut it away from the oil pan flange and reroute it with the fuel line. I've done a couple this way with absolutely zero problems so far. Both were race jeeps, so they got abused.

NO NO NO first of all, your tranny lines are 5/16 or 3/8 and never, i repeat never use fuel line to replace tranny line. if you are going to replace with rubber line always use tranny line, it has twice the tread count than fuel line,(fuel line will get soft and spongy in no time) if you replace with rubber both ends of the steel line need to be flared(double flared) to prevent the line from coming off.

Better advice than mine, no doubt. Come to think, it may have been 3/8 line we used. We went with fuel line because it was a parking lot fix to get home. I expected it to fail, but never did. The cooler lines are low-pressure, I guess. And if there's a better hose for the job, use that!

i wasn't trying to sound like an ass, just trying to prevnt problems.
a parking lot fix or trail fix would be fine, also the cooler lines are not low pressure (although chrysler trannies have the lowest pressures)

You didn't. Judging from your screen name, you certainly have MUCH more experience with transmissions than me! I was just relaying my experience. Honestly, one of the hose clamps I used on my fix was crap, and wouldn't tighten up completely. I meant to replace it, but never did, and it never leaked a drop. I had cut the lines with a pair of dikes, then tried to chean and flare them with a screwdriver. I would have been fine if it had just gotten me home, but I drove it like that for a couple of months before selling it, and my understanding is it's still wheeling! If I had had the time and opportunity to do it "right," though, there's no doubt I would have. Where do you get trans line? Any hydro shop?

I ran full rubber lines on my two jeep cherokee (longest time was 3 years, and no hose failures) all the way from the transmission to the radiator. You need about 22 FEET of trans cooler line if I remember correctly. Autozone/Advance has it for somewhere like 2.25 - 2.98 / ft. Cheaper than the OE lines and you can route it up along the frame out of the way from everything.. just steer it clear of the exhaust. I forget what type of fittings were on the transmission but I think it was like 3/8 Inverted Flare fittings but don't hold me to it.

I think I'm just going to go with the rubber tranny hose fix. I can't afford to get new lines AGAIN. Not to sure how I'm going to flare the ends of the steel lines without having the cool little tool. Might try the screwdriver trick and just double clamp both sides for just in case reasons. Looks like I'm headed to Auto Zone tomorrow.

Thanks for the advise guys I appreciate it as always.

Swampy's tranny lines are 5/16" double flared hard line then about 1ft of rubber tranny hose going to the trans cooler.....which has push lock fittings. I put hose clamps on top of the push lock for safety. I slid the rubber line over the flared 5/16" tube and put 2 hose clamps on the pressure side and one on the return. It's working well so far.

I was going to do it all in rubber hose but I thought that the metal line would disipate heat better.
I used 2 sticks of 5/16" metal brake line
tranny cooler
2ft of rubber trans line
lost of hose clamps
many cuss words trying to thread the ends into the side of my trans
