FWIW, this guy is LONG time motorcycle wrench and held "A&P" paper for aircraft (IOW, not a dumb@$$).
I suggested that simply clocking the arm/bellcrank may be all that needed...
So, at this point I believe it's likely a different shifter/linkage between the original '89 and the implanted '83? All I can find says they both should be NP208's? Unless he really has an older NP205 or the 208 linkages are different?

Got an 89 suburban [1500=1/2 ton] w/83 tranny and tx case...shifter linkage locks up trying to go fm 2wd to 4wd...bellcrank on tx case is at 1:00 in 2wd and 3:00 in 4wd...my buds 85 is in 11:00 in 2wd and 1:00 in 4wd hence the lock up
