Suggestions for seats for a DD Jeep

Ok, well I'm a bit fat or something, and managed to break the back of my stock seat in my TJ.
So I can either deal with driving around like the cool kids with the seat laid back, and me doing a crunch to sit up to reach the steering wheel, (not cool) or replace it.

Anyone know of anywhere in Raleigh I could go for a new seat? Aka, I see the stuff online, but I don't want to drop loot on an uncomfortable seat. I still need to be able to drive this thing back to Va, and down to the beach etc etc.

I figured I was going to also call some junkyards to see if I could get two of the newer style TJ seats, (I think they look more comfie?) Anyone got any other ideas?

Thanks

i went through the same thing in my XJ. The brackets have been FUBARed since may, ive been riding around with a big ammo can holding the seat up. Just yesterday i took it out, found where it had broken and welded it back together. Took just over an hour, so it might be something you could look into before you go buying new ones?

Nah, I wish that was the case.
My fat ass actually bent the left "hinge" apart. I can bend it back in place, (have done this twice) but each time it fails it gets worse and worse. The first time it just wouldn't "latch" so it would tumble forward whenever I hit the brakes. :D
(that was awesome at camp jeep, had to have my buddy in the back seat holding my seat back)
Then I fixed it after the first day there by bending it back. On the way home it made a "pop" sound and the back leaned a little.
I bent it a third time and this time when it popped, I almost killed myself on 540.
I kind of like not dying, soooooo I'm thinking "my fixes" are a bad idea.

But thanks for the advice, I just wish it could work. (I'm cheap)

Junk Yard

There's a lot of bucket seats that'll fit. You'll have to make adapters or something. Not hard. Just go a little overkill on the material to make up for lack of engineering.

I like Volvo Seats. I was looking at Ranger seats the other day. I think they were out of an Edge, or FX4 or something. They looked pretty spiffy.

Just go look around the yard.

Mini-van seats.
Voyager or Caravan front seats are nice and cushy. I had some out of a Voyager in my Samurai (tight fit).
The cushion really took a lot of trail bumpy out of it adn a nice benefit was the fold down armrest.
They just don't flop forward. I took those out to put in Neon front seats...they're OK. If I didn't need the rear seat (kids) I put the mini-vans back in.

LOL, let me tell ya, knowing that Dalmeir Benz had anything to do with those seat is kind of frightening.

I have a 2006 Dodge Sprinter Van for work, a bolt came out of the side frame, and the whole seat was all fecked up.

You know I ain't a small fella, so I was kinda concerned.

I pulled the seat out to repair it, JEEBUS what a piece of engineering garbage !!! There are no welds joining the sides, the pieces are joined like Legos, with a snap together joint. fawking scary !!

I was able to get the seat back together and functioning, I am SO glad the seat back is resting against the cargo wall, I don't want to trust the seat frame in a real situation.
Hell, the whole van is a unibody nightmare, chassis flex will and does crack the windshield if you happen to go somewhere that twists the body. Mine is a high roof 3500 dually, and some of the places I go aren't exactly vehicle friendly.

But anyway, I have a pair of Acura GSR seats I'll let go for $150, or I can come up with some others for about that same price, if you are able to make it out this way again.

I have the stock seats and wet okole seat covers out of my 2000 TJ that I will sell you for $50. I could use the extra space. I put Corbeau's in mine. I'm a pretty large guy at about 6'3 with a 38" waist. The Baja Ultra SS seats I've got are great. They are extremely comfortable and keep my precious little bottom planted when I go wheeling. I would recommend these to anyone. Just my two cents.

hey get a hold of SPEED FREAK , talk to him he has some of the nicest seats i have ever seen in his jeep...they are from HUNSAKER RACING...all the side bolsters, lumbar support, leg support and they are also 5 point ready...i cant remember what he paid but he said it was the most valuable money he spent on his jeep...said it was the best investment he had made on the vehicle...

I was looking at something like this:
http://www.hunsakersports.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=194

But I really wanted to find a set local to sit in. While not the "biggest" guy around, I ain't a little guy. and I get annoyed at things designed for the scrawny little 180 pound people of the world. :D

(especially if I were to drop 500$ and realize my fat ass wouldn't fit in the seat)

92 civic buckets

I've got a set of 92 civic buckets i'll let go of for $75.00 These are the ones with single sided head rests....

My celica seats are some of the most comfortable I have had. I had a set of Eclipse seats (flat mount, easy to install) were nice too.
Here are both of them.

I rode in some hunsakers on the trail. Not a little guy either (6'5" 250lbs. They were comfortable, but looked like they would live a short life in an uncovered jeep. The Corbeau SS Ultras were probably more comfortable and looked to be better built. Of course stock replacements for $50 would be the way I went on a DD.
