I'm a junior in mechanical engineering at NC State, and I am in the process of looking for some sort of job or internship for this summer. I know there are some engineers on here, but I was wondering if any of your companies typically do this type of thing, and if so maybe I could have some contact info? I know its a little late, but one company in Salisbury, my hometown, kinda got my hopes up and has been giving me the run-around now, so I have just decided I need to start looking again.
I'd love to work somewhere in the Salisbury/ Mooresville/ Statesville/ Concord/ Lexington area, so I could commute from home and save rent and the trouble of subleasing a place. I've got a simple resume, and could answer some questions through PM, I'd really appreciate some help.

Thanks,
Adam Spencer

I know of a place in Hickory, actually it MAY have been statesville, I'll check tomorrow....

I assume you know autocad?

What kind of industry are you looking to work in? Mechanical can take you anywhere and where you start will have a big impact on your future. ie. If you want to work designing cars or the like you want to intern at BMW or Ford. If you want to do mechanical hvac design and the like you start at a company that does this sort of work.

Thats the thing, I'm kind of open ended on my options right now, I'd like to work in some sort of manufacturing, but to me it really doesnt matter whether it is cars or valves for fire systems or anything else you could think of. For me its more learning about the actual design process, and just gaining experience, than it is about finding a career at this point. Ive worked on the floor doing manual labor in a hot tub factory since i was 16, so that is probably why i would like to stick to some kind of manufacturing, its what I know, but I'm looking to gain skills that could hopefully translate into any industry i may end up in.

Thanks again,
Adam

I checked on the possible internship that I mentioned earlier.

Its actually in Granite Falls (a bit far for you...) and its going to be AutoCAD, drafting cabinets, something I know you wouldnt want to do.

However, my dad works in Statesville, I could check with him. He knows the president of CommScope, so maybe I could snag you an internship with them

I looked up Commscope, seems interesting, I'd definitely like if you were able to give me some info, or maybe someone to contact.
Thanks for the help, I've been looking on my own, but overlooked the fact that I'm part of a network of hundreds of, more or less, local people that could possibly help out.

CommScope is actually quite a big company. Its headquartered right here in Hickory, and currently makes all the coaxial cable in the US. Youve probably seen their headquarters if you drive through Hickory via I-40. Its right off the exit to get to the Valley Hills Mall area.

I'll ask my dad tonight when he gets home, hes bound to know someone :)

Have you checked with Gamewell Mechanical in Salisbury?
Nope, not as of right now, but a friend mentioned it to me just a couple days ago, so I am going to give them a call very soon.
I wheeled with you and the Mog once last year and remember you mentioned being an engineer, are you affiliated with Gamewell, or you just know about them? I need to talk to them, because it would be really nice to have something that close to home.
