super dumbass

Durhams not so bad................they have a really neat old Railroad bed they turned in to a walking/biking/ get your ass robbed and beaten trail, and there's Duke University

still failing to see the up side

Uppity Durham is very nice, but its not all uppity. Just like anywhere.

it's not as bad as Baltimore

there is not much worse than baltimore,(philly is though)

the thing about durham is that even the nice parts are very close to the hood.

......................... walking distance, you do'nt have to be near the hood, the hood will come to you. Take the guy gun downed at noon at the streets of southport a year or so ago for one of many examples.

Here's another one...these always seems to pop up in Durham for some reason. I'm thinking to ask if I can rent a bus for an afternoon, would seem only fair if the schools chief can rent it for a day for personal use, why not all of us? Seriously though, this guy is in charge of education in Durham and then pulls this shit. Where do they come up with these assholes?

So let me ask this.
He did pay to rent it, apparently just not enough to cover costs.
Lets say he'd paid more, covered costs and then some.

Would that be a problem? That seems to me like a win-win situation.

Maybe it would be ok from a financial perspective IF opened to all. Prolli need a new agency to oversee all the rental business so costs will have to bump up a bit, then might have to have some audits and investigate a few scandals along the way. At least we'd be creating jobs I guess! But your 2nd line is sort of my point, he's THE GUY and shorted the system until caught. I guess I should be impressed that at least he tried to compensate the system albeit conveniently (to him) shorted.

Hey now, watch it. Philly isn't great, but it is much better than Baltimore!

I pretty much consider Baltimore the armpit of MD. And I mean that both figuratively AND literally. Look at the map.

I lived in downtown detroit during graduate school from 93-97. Got shot at twice on campus (wayne state university) minding my own business just walking from the lab or library to my apartment (which was on campus too). The highlight was probably when I got interviewed once on TV (local fox affiliate on a Friday night and I was the only sorry loser around at 10pm on a friday night) when they caught a dude that was raping other dude's. I didn't even know that is was going on or that it could go on frankly, so I had to stop and think about what I'd say to that when the reporter asked me. It took me some time since you can't say WTF on the air . I see it's now formally bankrupt too. To bring this full circle back to schools, my lab was across the street from the Detroit public Schools administrative building where the school board met every Monday evening. The Detroit PD would park a damn paddy wagon outside the front door around 7PM to haul all the fuctards out that raised hell because their kids were flunking or whatever their issue was. They'd cart out 15-20 every monday night in cuffs kicking and screaming. Now that I think about it, I shouldn't be so harsh on Durham, it's a resort town compared to Detroit.

I lived in Cary a few summers ago and I remember while driving to school I heard on the radio that 3 people were robbed at gunpoint in Durham at the EXACT SAME SPOT at the end of a bridge. This happened 3 days in a row at almost the exact time of day.........just thought that was pretty strange.

I wondered how long it would take to bring up my hometown... :)

I've been watching pretty closely about Detroit. Both of my brothers still live in the suburbs of Detroit, and my oldest brother still works downtown for DTE Energy (Duke Power for Detroiters). Yep - it's as bad as the media makes it sound. Sometimes even worse. We go up just about every year and have literally watched the decay. The saddest part is that the City Council members (only one that I'm aware of that are employed FULL TIME) have fought tooth and nail with this Emergency Manager who was appointed by the state to oversee the city. They challenged his authority in court (who paid for THAT since you are bankrupt?) all the while saying that the City Council would solve the problems and didn't need outside help. If it was that easy, they should have fixed the problems years ago. They just didn't want to see their gravy train come to an end.

Ironically, what they WERE able to accomplish was a unanimous vote to push for a Federal investigation into the George Zimmerman case, which occurred like 7 states and 600 miles from Detroit, of which they have no jurisdiction what-so-ever. Way to pay attention to the local problems, there!!!

As we were driving back home last Thanksgiving, we were driving through Detroit and my kids noticed that there were entire 10+ story apartment buildings with all of the windows blown out. Entire neighborhoods that were blacked out. Scary stuff. On a good note, my brother was telling me about a new trend in Detroit housing. People are buying up homes like crazy for pennies and paying people to live in them (so they won't get broken into). A friend of his bought 1 3 BR, 2 bath house for $1000 that needed next to no repair. He had to pay $5000 in back taxes, but there's deals to be had. He actually pays a family to live in it instead of them paying rent. It's cheaper than paying private security since the PD is worthless there.

When I worked in Detroit for my ex-inlaws, I was at the plant on a Saturday and worked a little later than I should have. As I was locking the inner office door, I heard glass breaking outside where my car was parked. I peeked out the window to see 5 black guys breaking into my car. They were armed with a sheetrock hammer which they used to break the sunroof. Since it was dusk, they couldn't tell that it was a metal moonroof. The distinct waffle pattern of the dent let me know that it was a drywall hammer. They then hit the back driver's side window, but didn't realize that it was too small to reach the lock so they hit the driver's window. They grabbed my gym bag, some CD's and my electric razor. I called the police only for them to tell me to drive to the station and fill out a report, even though they were STILL THERE. I had apparently made the mistake of telling them that I was inside the building and they were outside, so that implied that I was "safe".

It was a cold ride home with snow blowing in the broken windows. I did eventually go to the police station to file a report, only because my insurance company needed it. Otherwise it was a pointless exercise. We also once had the inner office broken into by someone knocking out glass block windows to break in. When they climbed over them, they cut themselves rather fiercely. There was blood all over the office floors. Since this was around the time of the OJ trail, I figured that they would LOVE to get their hands on that much DNA to get a solid conviction on a thief, but they didn't bother. They just instructed us on how best to clean it up. Nice.

I can completely relate to your experience. My research group while there was about 20 people. During the 4 years I was there accounting for turnover from graduations etc, just over 50% of the group had their car stolen. that's not the broken into situations either, that's full blow stolen. My wife was a graduate teaching assistant during that time and had a middle aged lady in her chemistry section. The lady drove in on a wed for class and had her van stolen. The next day (thurs) she brought the other family car in (had to come to class) and BAM, the bastards stole that too. She quit the class after that. Couldn't afford the automobiles! That was on campus, fairly well fortified. Each year in the fall, new students would arrive and without exception during my 4 years there an small framed Asian girl would get minced. I mean literally, they would stray a block or two off campus and get gang raped then show up a few days later in assorted garbage bags. One morning driving in (I drove in after I got married and moved off campus, about 13 miles) traffic was snarled beyond belief. Only to find a couple miles ahead there was a body hanging from an overpass. One of those with the fences up the sides for people to walk across. The brothers managed to get the dude over the top of the fence and hanging down the outside. Talk about rubber neckers slowing traffic. It's not civilized and seems to have maybe refurbished the downtown slightly since I left but the rest has gotten worse. I don't know today's stats, but the 1995 statistics I saw published were in Wayne County Michigan (the county Detroit resides) there were 37,000 automobiles stolen. That's impressive no matter how you look at it.

My wife and kids went to Rawlee for a cheer competition a while back and when they got to the hotel, there was some strung out chick selling crack under the stairs going to the top floor and she didn't even hesitate to ask if they wanted to buy some..... The inside of their room smelled of pot and a lot of shady characters hanging out. She didn't stay, needless to say.

I actually remember that... I think it was self-defense... :)

But you know, even my wife (born and raised in Lexington NC) has commented on how much less "rubber neck" traffic there is in Detroit than here. There's at least usually a REALLY good reason for slow traffic in Detroit. Here, you can go for miles at a glacial pace only to find nothing at the other end of it... just brake checking.
