Starts sometimes right on the first crank. Idles no issue but starts to load up and stumble inside the first 10 seconds.
Most times it takes a bit to fire and idles like shit. Sounds like it’s doubling up and choking itself out. Revving it is the same, doubling up and stumbling with pips out the intake.
It does burn some oil and smokes a bit. (Assuming valve seals)

New parts:
Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil
Timing belt and quadruple checked the timing
New fuel filter (haven’t verified fuel pressure)
New Bosch O2 sensor when I installed the header.

Has done this since I got it but seems to be getting worse.

I have checked all vacuum lines and cleaned the egr.

Any ideas?

Does it have a cel? I know it's OBD1 so won't necessarily lead you straight to the solution like obd2.

I had a 1994 sidekick engine in my last samurai. I remember it had a one year only or very limited range heated egr circuit that gave me some driveability issues until I tracked down the proper replacement.

Yes there is a red “check engine” illuminated on the cluster. Not the engine outline like on newer cars/trucks. It literally says “check engine” but not sure how to pull codes on this thing.
