Starts sometimes right on the first crank. Idles no issue but starts to load up and stumble inside the first 10 seconds.
Most times it takes a bit to fire and idles like shit. Sounds like it’s doubling up and choking itself out. Revving it is the same, doubling up and stumbling with pips out the intake.
It does burn some oil and smokes a bit. (Assuming valve seals)

New parts:
Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil
Timing belt and quadruple checked the timing
New fuel filter (haven’t verified fuel pressure)
New Bosch O2 sensor when I installed the header.

Has done this since I got it but seems to be getting worse.

I have checked all vacuum lines and cleaned the egr.

Any ideas?

Does it have a cel? I know it's OBD1 so won't necessarily lead you straight to the solution like obd2.

I had a 1994 sidekick engine in my last samurai. I remember it had a one year only or very limited range heated egr circuit that gave me some driveability issues until I tracked down the proper replacement.

Yes there is a red “check engine” illuminated on the cluster. Not the engine outline like on newer cars/trucks. It literally says “check engine” but not sure how to pull codes on this thing.

As far as pegging the tach .... these engines have been known to be adapted for aviation use and tuned and turned much higher on a regular basis that we do.
Is it carb'ed or efi?

EFI with a single tbi like injector.

If you can find someone with a snap on brick it will probably read the codes. I have one but not sure if i have the card for a Suzuki. In Jeeps you just key it off and on 3 times and leave it on the third and CEL blinks the codes.

Yeah apparently I can use a jumper wire on the diag port under the hood just gotta get some time to see what flashes at me.

I had an 89 tracker that had some issues with running. Jumped out the appropriate pins on the OBD1 port and it took me right to the issue which was the TPS being bad. There's really not alot to the old 8V stuff, it was a fairly simple system if i remember right.

The OBD system on my '85 S10 is stuuuupid simple. I just two ports with a paper clip and count the flashes. Takes me right to the culrpit!

I usually do the trick of recording it on my phone just in case I count the flashes wrong in the heat of the moment.

You should be able to find a list of OBDI codes on the interwebz.

UPDATE: got home tonight and the wife is out for girls night (free time!) got all the farm fed and happy and grabbed a piece of wire. Jump the 2&3 pin on the diag port and turned the key on. CEL flashed out 21. Checked the chart that @LBarr2002 posted earlier and TPS are the smoke signals this old thing threw at me. Grabbed the meter and checked ohms. It’s fuct. Got a new one on the way that hopefully helps this turd go make bad decisions again.

Side note: how the hell can I get one on Amazon for $24 but Rock auto and the local oreallys want $235 o_O Hopefully this fixes the issue enough to get me by.
