Trying to get some information on what would need to happen to swap a 98 (OBDII) engine and transmission into a 93 (OBDI) vehicle?

Would the computer from the 98 also need to be swapped?

What inspection ramifications would there be? (i.e. would the vehicle now be subject to emissions testing)

What else should I consider, or know about a swap like this?

If i remember correctly putting a newer motor in a non emissions car is fine, just have your normal safety inspection. Its going older motor into an obdii car that is the problem, then it wouldnt pass. And yes you will need the computer out of the 98 to run the 98 motor. You would also need the engine side harness for the newer car, as im sure there are differences. You could cut down that harness into a stand alone style so all you would need to do would be ground it and add power

can you be more specific about which motor & trans you have now & what you are swapping to? also what is your goal with the motor swap? if it's the same type motor, but just a newer year, you may be able to move your current sensors/fuel system/computer to the newer motor setup-although if you are trying to make a newer automatic trans work with it, it may be next to impossible-most manuals will be ok.

My hope is to swap a 98 grand Cherokee 5.9 liter and auto trans into my 93 grand Cherokee that currently has a 4.0 auto AW4.

im sure you would have to swap the wiring harness and all unless you get a custom harness and you would have the regular OBD1 inspection. when i done my 87 cherokee it took me about a month to do mine that was swapping in all new 96 stuff including re running the all new harness
