Here's the scenario:
My dad is a business type guy and he has carried this cheap swiss army knife like below for several years. Small enough not to get in the way and does the trick.

He was over at the house the other day and broke out the knife to cut something and it was dull as hell so I sharpened it for him...some. The knife is beat.

I want to get him a new knife or his bday. Are there any alternatives that are nicer than this $10 knife? It needs to be similar in size and functionality.

$10...? its up to $18.50 now

it can be had for cheaper elsewhere online.

I'd say you can't really go wrong with an old school pocket knife like an Old Timer or Case. you can get it with 3 different blades and still be really compact. the ones with damascus steel blades are really popular and you can sharpen them easily. you can even get them engraved with your dad's initials for a little more personality. Check out http://www.smkw.com/webapp/eCommerce/main_front.jsp this site, they have every possible blade you could ever want.

I dunno if you want to spend this kind of money, but I carry a BenchMade everywhere with me, as well as a variety of Gerbers (multi tool) and Leathermans at any given time. personally, my BenchMade is my favorite.

im not sure of what kind of i guess you could say "multi tools" they have, but ive been carrying SOG knives for a while now and although not the cheapest knives theyre pretty decently priced as long as you dont get them straight from SOG, for the money theyre the best knives ive ever carried

I would also recommend the Spyderco Ladybug. Force your dad into a knife that he can open with one hand and he'll never want to pick one up that requires two hands again. Not to mention that they ship razor sharp from the factory and hold an edge very well.

I carry a benchmade mini griptillion wherever I go. I've had 2 of them and wouldn't buy another knife. My sister had the ladybug for a while. Great knife. It's surprisingly really sharp out of the box

I have a Mini Griptilian as well as a few other Benchmades too. The axis lock is awesome and I recommend it over just about any other mid-size knife in the same price range. The only reason I agreed with the Spyderco Ladybug recommendation is that the size of the Ladybug is very comparable to the knife he has been carrying.

As long as you don't buy anything made by crkt or anything from the flea mkt...it's hard to go wrong. SOG and kershaw are my favorites as far as price/usefulness.

And this is the truth.

I use mostly benchmade for scuba and kershaw in my pocket although I do have a CRKT and I haven't had any issues with it... It is a pain to sharpen by hand though

What's wrong with CRKT?

I gave them three tries. Once with a walmart folder and twice with their high end folders. Their locking mechanism is weak, the safety is dumb and they must not know about red loctite yet. Just my opinion of course. :flipoff2: An argument about pocket knives is like an argument about truck brands...don't never go no where.
