Im building my 97 cherokee and was wondering the cons of a hack-n-tap instead of a true sye kit.
the hack-n-tap is alot cheaper and easier.
I already run the hack-n-tap in my tj,but its a 4 banger with not much power. It seems to be holding up ok.
The cherokee has the 4.0 with some sort of chip kit or something, so its pushing 3 times the power as the tj..
I will be running 36 iroks and an 8.8.

**also** Where do you get the hack-n-tap from?
what company sells them?

36's and an 8.8 is asking for trouble with a hack and tap. just pull the case and do a real SYE. not that hard really. jsut a little scary the first time you do it.

Do a quick search, I remember this coming up just a few weeks ago, and there were some decent facts...

I seriously doubt you will ever break a hack-n-tap, I ran one for years with a 4.6 stroker,231 case,9" rear ,38's and lots of throttle. I broke all sorts of stuff (snapped the front output clean of the t-case) but never had a moments trouble with a hack and tap. The install is a little tricky, you have to cut the rear output, drill and tap a hole in it to bolt it on. The Rubicon Express kit comes with everything you need (including the drill bit and tap) and is cheap. I'd call carolina rock shop, Andy may have one in stock.

depending on the gears in your axles lower the better I agree you will be O.K

Hack n taps may work, and I know a lot of people that have ran them without problems, but now you can pick up a complete SYE kit for under $200. I think PORC had one the other day for $160. For that little, I'd personally settle for the peace of mind.
