I got a 91 Cherokee. Right now it's lifted 4". I plan on doing a 6.5" Rough country, or possibly a 8" long arm.

Do I really need a SYE? Can I get by with out it if I only go 6.5?

What exactly are they ment to "fix"? What are the pros and cons?

Any help is appreciated....

It will move the driveshaft U-joint on the tcase end further forward, making the effective shaft longer, lessening the angles between driveshaft and tcase/rear pinion. Excessive angles causes vibrations that can not only feel bad, but can quickly wear out U-joints.
I've read that the rule of thumb on an XJ is anything over 4" lift should have an SYE. This is a prett broad statement, probably doenst take into account if there's an angle shim on the rear leafpack.
It will also help retain the driveshaft if you have monster flex. With the stock slipyoke, if the rear axle drooped enough, it could pull out the driveshaft. Under load, this could monkey up the last 1/2" or so of splines as the d'shaft exits the tcase.
Of course if there wasnt enough slip built into the new driveshaft with SYE, this wouldnt be a good condition either, but the d'shaft might hold up.

Is there any downside to a SYE?..cost and labor I guess might be all.

Like T said, anything over about 4" a SYE is recommended. can you get by without it? Probably, depends on rear axle shims, tcase drop kit, length of your current driveshaft, etc. Also if you don't do the SYE, carry a plastic soda/water bottle to use as a stopper on the tcase when you break the driveshaft :)

Thanks guys, Still kinda new to this. I just didn't want to buy a bunch of stuff that companies "recomend" only to find out I didn't need it. I've done that before in other things.

As allways, great help on here. Looks like I'll be gettin the SYE

Get ya a front drive shaft out of a XJ, TJ, or ZJ and have it cut down for a rear one. That will get you the CV shaft to go with the SYE.

Ran a 6.5 rough country with pinion wedges, had no issues. Went up to 8 inches with proper wedge size, started tearing up my T case. Had a T case drop, but in my experience 6.5 didn't need one, 8 inches I had nothing but issues.

PORC makes a inexpensive sye kit.. like think it was 140-180.. thats like 100 cheaper than elsewhere.. put it in a stock yj that ate two t-cases, bent shaft and cracked rear housing.. got a'ville powertrain to cut a xj frt d'shaft for $30. sye kit looks /just/ like advance adapters. easy install. well all but frt+rear pinion nuts! did it in my aptmt in 1 1/2 hrs once off vehicle.

X2. I used the porc sye and it was fine. The design was a little different but it took a beating from me fine. Super fast install. The instructions you get from them blow but its super easy to get in. If you have any problems youtube is more helpful than paper instructions imho.
