I finally ventured into putting a winch on my jeep. I decided to go with the Recon 10,500 with synthetic rope. Before anyone post you get what you pay for I knew when I purchased it, it wasn't a Warn. I've been wheeling for about 8 years now and there has been only 1 or 2 times so I couldn’t truly used a winch so I could not justify 1000-1500 for a winch. To be honest I mainly wanted the winch because I think they look cool on the front of jeep.

Now on to my question, I am not familiar with synthetic winch line but both times I've used the winch the line has completely mated together and slipped on the drum causing the anchor point to pull apart. I was just playing with it both times so I didn't even get close to 10.500lbs it rated for.

The first time a guy with a Willy's jeep was stuck on show off rock because his rear bumper dug in and the second time I was pulling up a 4x4 fence post in my yard. The first time it happened it was right after I purchased the winch so I assumed it was caused by the factory not winding the line tightly on the drum.

So once I fixed the crimp lug I hooked it to a tree and drug the brakes as I wound the line back in to make sure the line was tightly wound on the drum. But now that it has happen again I am wondering if it is bad synthetic line causing this?

okoffroad sells a Winchrope Retainer that might help. But did you wind under the drum and make several loops before attaching the terminal end?

My Smitty has a line sleeve, sorta like the same thing you would use to protect it from abrasions, that seems to really grab the drum. My Warn does not and it has yet to slip to my knowledge.
