Have been thinking about using synthetic rope instead of metal rope on my winch. a couple of questions.

I have found that this stuff is exspensive.

On Ebay, I found 50' stuff for like $35. If I bought two and had them wove together like the do for repairs and for the eye's, how well do you think that would work. That would give me 100' for $70 bucks, plus shipping of course.

Also found some orange stuff(not amsteal) for $145 for 100'

Thoughts??

Chip,
The strength #s on that ATV durasteel rope compared to the amsteel ones we sell seem really low. Ours is ~14K rated for the 5/16" rope vs their ~10K.......seems kind of sketchy that they compare their 5/16" rope to amsteel 1/4"

I can sell you a 5/16x100' amsteel rope for the exact same price if you want. Just let me know.

Thanks
Andy

Chip, as heavy as your jeep is, I would not waste my money on anything smaller than 3/8's. I have seen at least 4 people in our club break 5/16's.

How much for 3/8"x100'? If you don't mind me asking. Thanks.

Can you get it in longer lengths?

When comapred to the higher money products such as Warn or Ramsey or Masterpulls synthetic, you really can't beat the Amsteel especially for the price of it. I ordered both of mine from Scott over at Rockstomper years ago and have been very happy with both of them

Ok so whats with the breaks to easy bit ?

Is it a situation where a steel cable would have broke ?

or a chafing issue ? on rocks ?

I'm curious as I had planed to get some rope in the near future..

on the trail I have only seen one place where rope is inferior, and that's when it has to slide over rocks. Saw a guy who had a length of old fire hose over his rope to keep it from having to slide over rocks.

After seeing a wire cable break and slingshot, rope is very appealing. IF you were to break it, it can be spliced even if it's in the middle of the length.

Yes, that is why the ropes we sell come with a 10 foot abrasion guard to protect the rope.

Most of the issues with rope that we see are from people that don't take care of it.......same thing that happens to a wire rope when you don't respool the wire, etc.

Let me know if I can help

3 of them just broke, the other went under a tire while winching.

I don't think that the synthetic ropes handle shock loading very well. It happens a lot when winching if you don't know what you are doing. You winch and drive at the same time get some traction, then the rope gets slack and you slide, loads the rope up and snaps it. Cable seems to handle this much better. I can't wait untill I can afford rope because pulling it all over the hill is much easier. Just remeber to oversize the rope and to stop and wait for the winch to catch up.

if you need some extra abrasion guard material, pm "ALLIANCE HTW", he should be able to get any length you want.

(I found some on McMaster-Carr's site the other day, but Billy says he can get it cheaper...)
