We here goes. I have a 231 j t-case with a SYE kit in it. I got the case used with the SYE already installed so i am not sure what kind of SYE kit it is. There is a grinding noise when down shifting or even sometimes when I get out of the gas to coast. Any suggestions. I could use some feedback, thanks.

down shifting? There really is no down shifting like with a manual transmission.

Possibly your expecting shift on the fly into low range?

You can down shift if your rolling slightly, Sorta like going into reverse gear otherwise your gonna hear grinding noise as you yank on the gear lever.

And depending on the speed your moving at you will hear some gear noise from the planetaries while in low range, if your coasting down a hill etc.. Fortunately the cases are pretty cheap if you need to replace one, and even full rebuild kits aren't to bad priced.

Could be the planetary gears, but unlikely. Possibly the wear pads on the shift fork are gone allowing the chain to float a little more and create a interminent rub. I have also seen a broken c clip on the output side of the main shaft which would allowed the chain to rub( this however was pretty constant and loud) Are you sure the noise is the Tcase?

The t-case and drive shaft is the only thing I have changed. It is a grinding sound when I am down shifting the tranny. I am not shifting t-case on the fly. Does anyone know much end play (in and out) the fixed yoke should have? This one seems to have an excessive amount.

anybody else have issues with there 231? I cant believe i am the only one. I could really use the help please!

in mine i have to shift on the go 4high doesnt matter but i used to stop to shift to 4lo an when you put it in gear it would grind bad but ever since ive started rolling at about 2 or 3 mph it doesnt grind so i would suggest trying that first

There shouldnt be any real in and out play of the output. My guess would be either the shift rail spring, a snap ring missing or the rear yoke nut is loose. try tightening the rear output nut and see if that makes a difference.
