How hard is it to replace a NP231 t-case in a 87 wrangler ?? Is it something a novice can do or are you better off taking it to someone else??

It's a fairly simple job. One of the hardest things is that the top center bolt that holds the tcase to the trans is sometimes a small 12 point head, different from the rest, go figure :( Take the driveshafts out and support the trans while you lower the driveline so you can get to it. Otherwise, shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Like JC said, pretty simple and a good place to start "learning" how to work on your Jeep. You should have a 21 spline input as well. Make sure your new one matches or you will be scratching your head and posting back up wondering why it will not go in.

Since you can get them, usually in pretty good condition, for $100-200, if it was mine I would put a used one in. You could pull the case halves apart and check for any obvious problems. Chain wear/stretch is a common problem but if all appears good internally you should be OK. If I had loads of $ and got a warranty with the rebuilt one I would consider it for a daily driver though.
