T176 problem

I have a T176 behind a 304, shifts great, runs strong, but pops out of second gear when coasting. Never pops out while accelerating, our just maintaining speed, but coasting with clutch pedal out, will pop out everytime. Any ideas? Shift linkage problem? Synchronizer?

Rebuild time. Sounds like the detents and springs are worn.
There is no linkage, the stalk drops straight into the tranny.
