if you YJ armor had screw holes in the middle as well, the armor could be used to fix the typical tailgate bowing from the stock spare tire.

Also, do these attach via nutserts or self tappers?

The factory hinges bolt it in then the factory 4 holes in the middle, lastly their are 3 more holes to the the left that will be counter bored and nut serts provided.
