I’ve searched and read the discussions on the law but was wondering if anyone here has actually gone through the process? What actual paperwork do you need? MSO? Inspection required? Painful process? Motorcycle or car insurance?

I am seeing more of them running around Burlington these days and would like to tag mine and get more use out of it.

I have mine done. Basically, you have to put all the safety items listed( turn signals, windshield, etc.), get inspected at a normal inspection station, then fill out the MVR-59 and have the MSO at the tag office. I am on a FB group "NC Street Legal SxS & UTV's" and there is a lot of discussion about which DMV tag offices are friendly to the process and which ones arent. Some claim the conversion has to be done by a shop, when there is clearly a self performed box to check on the MVR-59, so you might search on that group for you town.

The best insurance i found was GEICO for full coverage, about $350 a year. You have to be careful some companies will insure a SxS, but not cover use on the street. with Geico its a normal motorcycle policy.

Fortunately my SXS came with everything but the windshield. I did read you had to have wipers and windshield if you wanted to not wear a helmet. If you didn’t have those a helmet would be required. That is how I interpreted the law anyway. I will have to get the wife to join that group as I do not partake of the facietweetie thing.

I've done 4 so far. The key is finding a DMV office that isn't braindead...LOL

You'll need MVR-59 (Notarized), Bill Of Sale, Manufacturers Certificate of Origin, Inspection Form and Proof of Insurance. Make copies of MCO and BOS if you want them because you wont get them back. You are allowed to fill out the MVR-59 form yourself but some DMV will say you cant. You arent required to have DOT tires but will need windshield (or Goggles), signals, seatbelts, brake lights and normal safety stuff. Make sure your insurance policy states you can drive it on the road.

I bought mine through a Montana LLC (not sales tax) and registered it in MT. No inspections, taxes and a permanent plate.

All the info in here is correct for NC purposes.

I bought mine used out of Tenn. It came with a Tenn title. Any idea if this could take place of the MCO? Will Can-Am send me one if needed? Not sure I a BOS either. Maybe I just shouldn't worry about it..
