Tail light issue

Well, I bough a 1989 Nissan Pathfinder 2dr SEV6 4x4 today with only 114k miles. The body is straight with very little rust, no rips in the interior with just one small crack in the dash and it runs like a top.

Only problem is the damn tail lights don't work. :(

Since the brake lights do, the first thought was to change the bulbs since they are like most dual filament bulbs.

Well, the bulbs are fine but changed them for good measure anyways. Then checked the fuses. Fuses are fine, but I pulled every one and checked just in case.

So, it is not the bulb, and it is not the fuse.
The wires at the socket look fine are free from any corrosion.

Tested the socket with a volt meter and it does not get anything.

Short of pulling the interior out and go though all the wires, is there a common issue or something else that I could be missing.

does it have a trailer connector on it ?

I have run into this a few times, to work a normal 4pin trailer connector, Asian vehicles need a converter to make the turn signals work with the trailer lights.

most are spliced into the wiring with "scotch lock" type connectors, that cut the harness insulation, and eventually work thru the wires. another type " T's" into the harnes at a body connector, all tail light functions go thru the converter box and if the box fries ( which happens a lot ) the tailights quit working.

No hitch never has been one. The bumper will not even take a ball. That would have been my next step if there was one.

It really has me a little boggled and I am a little apprehensive about ripping all the interior out as there is really very little that can go wrong with the wires themselves.

Start your way from the front. Does turn signals work? Maybe the headlight switch?
