Talk me out of '07 5.9 CTD

that you don't trust your own work?
J/K

Correction. I would not buy ANY diesel truck in 2007 or the first half of 2008. If I was a fleet owner, I would have been buying up trucks in late 2005 and 2006. I would then start buying again in mid 2008 and heavily in 2009. In 2010 the emissions equipment gets more complicated. I really wish the EPA would have given a 5 yr cycle on this emissions program instead of 3.

you do realize there are tier implications in 08 and 09 right?

Im not sure its going to impact the LT market (I know it wont from Dodge, and actually the 6.7 just earned 2010 certs) but its not making life easier for the diesel guys...

I don't see the big deal about not being able to get a new 5.9L engine. The chance you trash a 5.9L engine with standard maintenance performed is slim. If you do, a reman or used engine/block will work just fine for the length of time most people own a new truck to the time they sell it.
Buy the one you like the most. At least its a Cummins.
My 96 driving down the road one day started shooting antifreeze out the side of the head between the block....
There was a problem from new that showed up at 85,000 miles and the head bolts started popping one at a time. When I check it two head bolts were just setting there. Took it in to have the head pulled and they broke more and could not get any out of the block, Cummins sent a few techs up and Dodge Starr techs, all looking at it but could not get any thing done...
Got it covered under the 100,000 warr. for a new long block,
For some reason they could not get the rebuilds and I was pushing for new, anyways but luck would have it that is all they had...

I try to read dieseltruckresource.com a good bit and keep reading about people with the 6.7 coming into the dealer with DPF issues and weird codes, sometimes as soon as 1k miles. And these are completely stock trucks!!! :shaking:

I don't claim to be a diesel expert at all, it just seems to be common sense to get the 5.9. And make sure you are comfortable with the payments! Don't forgot insurance on a brand new vehicle will be higher too.

understamd that motor will never be produced again. You can get yours rebuilt, but you will not have the option of a new replacement motor. Even if yours throws a rod through the side of the block at 32k. They just aren't allowed to be built (actually arent allowed to be sold in the US).

Well I think I have pretty good info.
Pm me if you would like to know why....
There will never be another NEW 5.9 motor built that will be legal for sale in the US after 12/31/06 this isn't new.
The local distributor (Cummins Atlantic) individually has over 800 of these motors in stock still, but they sell on average 10-20/week from the Spartanburg branch. This motor sees less than 5% of its usage in Dodge trucks,.............
Yes you can buy sleeves, pistons rods everything needed to build one, but you can not buy a complete one.
Cummins owns RECON, you can still buy RECON remanufactured engines, you can not buy a NEW engine.
This is why it is hard to follow you, the info you are giving keeps changing.....
First you say they aren't allowed to be built, then you say that they can't even be sold in the US...... Then you say one local Dist has 800 for sale and is selling 10-20 a week.
Then you end up all that to say that you can still buy a RECON engine but you can not buy a NEW engine.......
So can they sell them NEW and are they selling them NEW?

This is what I think is going on and maybe someone will correct me or add to it.
If it true all Cummins plants shut down making the 5.9 and they are not going to be used for anything new from this point on, they being, Cummins and Dodge, have a lot of them setting around to use for the next several years and at one point those 5.9's will be gone from the new stock and will be no more. The Recon will be pumping out motors for more years then we would need them I would bet and the day of having a truck and not having a motor to put in it would never be a problem. I don't think I would ever worry about getting one of the 5.9 trucks or say that would be a bad point about getting one.

I checked into insurance and its actually $25 cheaper every 6 months for the 07 vs an 03. Im well aware of what the payments will be, and while I dread the idea of payments, it's something Im 100% certain I can handle.

I never said that they couldn't be sold anymore.
I said they cant be built for sale in the US anymore.
No engine that is non tier rated (all 5.9 b series) that is manufactured after 12/31/06 is legal for sale in the US. Now if there is a new engine sitting on a shelf that was built in 42 in can be sold.

The motor is not out of production, they still churn them out by the hundreds per day but they are exclusively for sale distribution and use outside of the US, and BTW I wouldnt get caught with the wrong one here.

Well, I talked myself out of this one, its just too darn much money. Anybody know where to find a good deal on a used 03-newer CTD?

There are too many versions of the ISB just to say that it is or isn't available anymore. Are you refering to a Dodge OBDII engine? A normal production ISB? An EGR ISB, a CAPS Fuel System ISB,a common rail fuel system ISB, an ECO ISB(rear gear housing)? etc. As far as the DODGE engine is concerned you CANNOT purchase a NEW engine after the last of pre 07 production run out, only recon, or the parts to fix it. Bottom Line

PS:The parts department usually doesn't have the whole story, basically the put in the number and see that it's in stock, so its for sale, till he puts in that number again and theres none left. Then someone will tell him why there not ordering/getting anymore and he'll let you know that reason too. After wasting your time<----personal experience

I guess we need to all stop buying any jeep older then an 07 too, since they don't make the inline 6 anymore
