I have an 82 CJ8 that is making a tapping sound. The rythem is the same as engine RPM. My guess is a clutch bolt area sound.

What is the easiest way to get at this to check? It is a manual tranny, T176. From looking at it I think I need to pull the tranny in order to get at the fly wheel bolts to check those. Is it possible to pull the tranny back without removing to do this work?

If I have to remove, what all do I have to do? Here is what I think I need to do but have never removed a tranny.
1. Disconnect battery.
2. Disconnect drive shaft from xfer case.
3. Remove skid plate.
4. Remove xfer case.
5. Remove shifters
6. Disconnect clutch linkage.
7. Remove starter motor.
8. Support tranny, disconnect bolts, drop down.

sounds about right for tranny removal. There's the inspection cover along the bottom of teh bellhsg, but I don't think you'll be able to see the clutch-flywheel bolt heads from there.

i wouldnt think it would be the bolts. if anything i would think its something with your engine or your release berring if it goes along with your RPM's.

if you go to check the bolts on the fly wheel you will have to remove the tranny all the way because you need to take the pressure plate and clutch disk off to get to the bolts because they are behind those two things.

it takes me about 3 days to take off a tranny replace the clutch and re-assemble everything back together and i have done this job over 4 times with my YJ and a couple side jobs

i would check all around the engine to make sure its not a valve or rocker arm making that tapping noise before doing this job!!!

if you take on this project i recomend getting a Haynes CJ Manual!!!!!!!!! they run about $20 and are well worth the money it will tell you how to do everything for this job

i have never worked on a cj but this would be the steps to remove a tranny for a YJ which im pretty sure would be very similar

-take negative wire off battery
-remove all wires and hoses (including slave cylinder hose and starter)
-remove shift lever(s) (push down on the ring around the shift lever and turn it conter clockwise it should pop up)
-remove both front and rear drive shafts
-remove the bolts that attach your exhaust pipe to your exaust manifold if the pipe is in the way of the tranny (optional)
-remove all bolts around the bell housing of the tranny
-support the oil pan of the engine with a block of wood(when the tranny comes out the engine will tilt)
-support skid plate with jack stands
-remove skid plate bolts(in my opinion keeping the skid plate attached to the tranny mount is much easier)
-begin rocking the trany out (you might want a friend to help you out)
-keep a good look out around the tranny and engine to make sure there is no sudden moves
Hopefully this info helps and also if you do remove the tranny it is in your best intrest to replace all clutch components because this job SUCKS!!!!!!!!! HOPE YOU HAVE FUN!
