Helping my dad but a truck from a private seller.

Will we still have to pay the 3% NC sales tax? If so, do I pay it when I register at the DMV?

You pay the taxes on the vehicle value at the DMV when you get your tag. They stopped going off sale price some time ago.

In guilford county, we pay a highway use tax (and and tag fee and $40 title fee plus cash to the notary) when initially registering a vehicle. Without doing any research, I want to say it's 3% of the vehicles value in the DMV computer, up to $300 maximum. Then of course every year you pay property tax and yearly tag fee, after inspection.

Yes, that 300 is a cap on sales tax. Property tax is the one that Bites! And DMV no longer takes a bill of sale, from a private party. Only Dealers. So, whatever "They" say the NC book calls for, is what they charge. You can later try to Prove a lesser value, but Good Luck! I bought a second hand car trailer [18'], with a 06 title. Initially, they should my property tax value at $5000! My written [& by phone] re-appraisal, with submitted pictures, lowered it to $3500! I Even sent trailer Sales adds, but they Claim they have to use the sites approved by NC!
ROBBERS!

You can contact the commissioner if you feel the value of the vehicle is much less than the "computer" which cant see the condition of the vehicle. If you send pictures, etc and explain the super poor condition they should approve the lower rate and refund you a portion. With my 1987 YJ, they wanted to say it was worth $6000

But this NC and their gestapo property taxes are outrageous. You are better off going to a different state and titling/registering there.

UPDATE-

That $300 maximum is not accurate. Private sale went through, DMV this morning charged $600.

FYI

Simple solution....need to pass a state law. Whatever the state values your vehicle, etc.....if you think it's too high, list it for sale for some period, 3 or 6 months. If nobody buys at that price, then county has to buy it from you, at the price they say it's worth. I'd make a killing on old CJ's.

Nazi references always bring the chuckles for me.
My excursion we "fudged" the cost sheet and I still got bent over. Cost $440 bucks to tag it. Sucks. If it needed a weighted tag I would have been in tears.

I've always thought that they should be willing to purchase any property, at any time, for their appraised tax value.
