Team Rush upgrade with a 2.5L?

I have a stock 84 CJ7 with the 2.5L 150, stock Carter 1bbrl, and 4 speed transmission. I wanted to know if the Team Rush ignition upgrade would be benificial; everything I have read is in regard to the I6.

I am also thinking about doing the Nutter bypass, and upgrading to a Weber 34/34 (I already have the carb, just haven't installed). Again, most of what I have read relates to the I6, not much on the pro's and con's of a 4cyl.

Any advise appreciated.

What type of Distributor is in those? a points or Electronic? by the year I'd guess Electronic, but I don't know.

If points, see if you can upgrade to an electronic. The only other thing I can think of would be that I doubt you can find a Distributor cap for the 4cyl that is a Wide cap and rotor. Seeing as you're increasing the voltage, you may have spark jump under the cap without having more gap between the plug wire terminals.

Other than that, I think TR's upgrade calls for the Motorcraft Ignition module. I'd trade that out for a 4 pin GM module and mount it to a heat sink of some sort. I used a Computer CPU Heat sink. With that, remove any ballast resistor or Resistance wire in the ignition system and you can run a full 12 V. to you Ignition all the time, not just at start. The resistor would be found on the Run circuit between your Keyed Ignition and the Ignition Module. A Ceramic Piece (Ballast resistor) or a Thick wire jumper wire (for lack of better description).

I run the Big for Cap, rotor, Heavier Plug wires, Ford TFI coil and GM HEI 4 pin and no resistors and love it.

It is an electronic distributor, your right. I think I'm going to hold off on the team rush since I'm not having any ignition issues right now.

How about the Nutter; any experience with that on a 4cyl?

I'm not sure if an "84" 4cyl. has an on board diagnostic computer.
The whole idea of the "Nutter Bypass", is to negate said contraption. If you don't have an OBD comp, then you should be solely running off of the control module, & no changes are needed.

All of my info, is for the 4.2L I6. My heep came with it, so I never looked into any 4 cyl. mods.

Junk Yard Genius, came up with the "Team Rush" upgrade for the 4.2L (258 cid) I6. I don't know if he ever had anything for the 4cyl.

The '84 150 does not need and cannot be "nutter bypassed". The carb on it is not a Carter BBD like on the 258, it's a Carter YFA. The nutter bypass effectively takes the stepper motors out of the emissions control AND eliminates the ECU. Now, the 84 with the 150 does have the ecu, but it's functions are a little more limited. You CAN wire the harness to eliminate the ECU and run it, as Buckshot said, just off of the dizzy, coil, and ignition module. I've done this on an 84 scrambler that used the 150 and it worked very well. Follow the Team Rush (JunkyardGenius) instructions/diagrams to wire the system as if it were an older CJ without the ECU. I have a diagram saved to my photobucket, but cannot access it here at work. I have it posted on another thread in here somehwere though.

I kinda forgot about this thread, sorry. Here is the diagram.

Wire your jeep up like the top diagram and it'll run just fine. You'll be able to remove everything else from the harness including the ECU. I've done this before on an 84 scrambler and was able to really clean up under the hood. If you have any specific questions, you can PM me. It's still fairly fresh in my brain.
