I'm trying to trade my Ranger for a Jeep of any kind preferably a wrangler but open to all models....I've been offered a few grand Cherokee and Cherokee but I'm not sure as how able to be wheeled/ DD they are. As far as trail capable and DD capable which would you go for? The wrangler is harder to trade for but appeals to me more. This is my truck...

What year grand Cherokee.

It's a 96 the one I got offered in great condition but already has 164,000 not that miles necessarily scare me but it will be a DD I feel like I would need cash on his end for sure but not sure how much to be honest

I would give no more than $1200 for that Zj but I'm a cheap bastard.

Seriously? Well what would you suggest I look to trade for? Don't get me wrong my truck is great and wheels fine and all but I have another 97 same engine trans color everything but with only a 105 so.

things to be aware of with zj's are: the rear dana 35 sucks for serious use, axles and spider gears are usually the first weak spots you'll find. 4.0's are almost indestructible, don't be scared of higher mileage with these, but they will seem underpowered in a zj with more than 31's. lifting them isn't too bad, but once you go past 3", control arms, track bars and steering linkage angles will be an issue.
if you're talking v8's the dana 44a rear is ok for the power, but doesn't react well to twisting the housing up off-road and upgrade parts/lockers are limited. also, the all-wheel drive transfer cases have a habit of tearing up viscous couplers at the wrong time and get expensive to fix. the v8's seem to do ok reliablity wise, but don't expect great gas mileage. shop around for zj's, according to the book values they aren't worth near what some people are asking (should be able to find reasonably good shape under $2000).
depending on how much room you need/want, i'd probably lean towards an xj-some came with dana 44's or chrysler 8 1/4 in the rear, if they didn't, the rear leaf setup is much easier(cheaper) to swap a ford 8.8 into; the xj's power to weight ratio, narrower body and shorter overhang also work better off road.

Ok yeah I feared that. I knew that rear 35 blew to a certain extent. I don't wheel that hard but I like having some peace of mind when I roll up to the trail you know. I'm leaning more towards xj TJ

That has to be 4.0 with the 242/42re doesnt it? Id say no more than 1800 for the ZJ the engine if taken care of will run 300-400k for sure... Like flatblack said rear axle is trash(but cheap and very accesible), front isnt to bad if you find wj parts and linkage to replace the pussy steering they come with its low pinion more than likely and will leak from inside seals around 250k on but honestly id take the tires off the ford and tell him that and whatever you can find to pull will take the money he owes you in trade or atleast some of the money possibly! what do you value your truck at? IMHO you could do better on your trade but the zj is great length wise and coil springs all the way around... with 31's you can have alot of fun with it 35's and upgrade on axles they are hard to stop! Once again like ^ said you could find a nice clean xj the weight is great but i love having coiled rear!:driver:

I turned down 6 cash on my truck I expected cash on this guys end of the trade....but I'm steering clear of this one for now I do believe.

Yeah good move... If it was lifted tires and leather lol than i would have jumped on it if i were you!!!

4.5 rough country 2 inch spacers one big dent(tree) on the door automatic with 150,000? Looks a little better. Not the best I could get though I don't think I have a 2.5 auto Wrangler I can for sure trade for but re gearing is so damn expensive and it's needs lift.
