I have alot of large, sickly trees in my yard w rotting branches here and there. Oaks, Maples, and dang Poplars. I just noticed recently large, Black Ant mounds spreading from the bases of some of these trees. Is it termites in the trees, can I save the trees somehow, or do I need to buy a new chainsaw?? thanks in advance for help

No idea. If you call an arborist, like Jeff Kish at Bartlett, they will give you a free evaluation/estimate.

Termites can only live inside the nest. So if you're seeing bugs out and about, they're not termites.

I would recommend calling an arborist, though. If they can prune up the trees and get them healthy again, it's money well spent, IMHO.

big black ants, say 1/4 and bigger are generally found in older more mature hardwoods. problem for you is its useually a good sign of heart rot in the tree. I'm no tree doctor but I've cut alot of wood and fell or help fell quite a few trees. Most every hardwood I ever saw or dropped myself with big black ants on the trunk or with obvious nesting from the base had deseased or rotten hearts. Another good sign is fungus and mold growing on the tree. Good healhty trees don't have alot of other growth. We dropped a 36 inch base red oak for my childhood church that had a 12 wide rotten hole that ran up the main trunk. It was still producing leaves when we brought it down. It had huge black ants in it the size of pennys. A nest of owls flew out when my dad was up in the tree. He was bringing down some really large boughs to get the weight right to avoid the church as we fell it. He almost came down the bad way and I'm pretty sure he nearly messed his drawers.

These SOB are all over my place its gonna be crazy ass year with no winter thats for sure... Poisioned wood is what terminex uses well some kinda shit that kills em!!! good luck
