TF 727 TV cable adjustment

Finally finished up swapping a 727 into my CJ7 today. I've attempted to set up the TV cable correctly, but have run into another snag. I'm using a Lokar cable for a 727. In the instructions, it says that when all the slack is removed it is correctly adjusted. This will give full throw of the TV arm on the tranny at wide open throttle. There is a small amount of "play" in the TV arm while the carb is at idle. I've read this is normal. There is also a return spring that keeps the TV arm pulled forward at idle. My question is, do you allow that "play" as part of the slack? Or, is the beginning of adjustment at the point where you first start to feel tension as you pull back on the TV arm. Right now I have it adjusted with no slack with the TV arm all the way forward as the starting point. I took it for a test drive around my neighborhood this afternoon. It drove fine, but it seems to shift into second really quick after pulling away from a stop sign and I'm not sure if I even felt it shift into 3rd. If it did, It was real smooth. :driver: If anybody has any advice, I would really appreciate it. Don't want to screw this tranny up due to a bad adjustment. Thanks.

I didnt use the cable on mine but I used the linkage. I had to drive mine around and play with the adjustment until it felt right. If it seems to shift too soon then take out some of the slack. I think that might help.

Thanks Nathan. That's probably what I will do. From what I've read, you just have to be careful with the TV setup on a 727 so you don't mung up the tranny. I sometimes tend to over think things though.

Also the 727 wont down shift at speeds greater then 45mph. Mine has a relatively long first gear a moderate to short second gear then into third gear. It is really noticable in 4 low. Sometimes on hammer down hill climbs I just shift it to second so it wont try to shift into third.

1) iVE NEVER MUCKED WITH A 727
2) One TV cable adjustments I tend to shoot for tight to real close at idle with any lee way given on the top end.

You need to muck with one sometime. It's been a learning experience.
Anyway, on the cable adjustment, do you mean that you start the adjustments with there being no free play down at the TV arm on the tranny? I've got a feeling that's where I messed up. Thanks for the help guys.

I definately need to play around with the adjustment some then. Like I said, at this point where I have it now, it shifts into second almost as soon as you get moving. Thanks.

That is definitly shifting too soon. The speed at which it shifts depends on your gearing. I would listen to engine rev. Just play with it. As long as you dont drive it too far I think you will be ok.

At idle push in the adjustment button and retract the TV cable all the way to snug (not full on tight) Then have someone sit inside and fully depress the throttle, while you are holding the adjustment down. This will allow the cable to pull out fully. (you dont want the TV cable being the throttle limiter) IME using 700r4 I would rather have it snug at the top than have it sloppy at idle. Id bet you have a bit of slop at idle...if not, well Id be curious about the trans end of the hook up.

At idle, my slop is down at the trans end of the cable. On my 727 there is a small amount of free play before you can feel tension on the TV arm. I've read somewhere that this is normal. I think that slop is what I need to adjust out. At least some anyway. I'm gonna fool around with it some this weekend to see what I can come up with. Thanks for the help.

just curious.....what transmission were you running before? Im thinking of going to auto. I have a t18 now, just would love to be able to have a lil more control. Did you have any problems with drive shaft being too close to the pan?

We are doing a custom 2 piece front shaft to clear the pan.

He had a T176 prior to the 727

Thats what i figured. That is also why i havent done this yet. Will i have to do a 2pc dshaft with the tf999?

Messed around with the TV cable adjustment today. I think I've got it about where it needs to be now. Drove it around the neighborhood again and it now shifts what I would call normal. I appreciate all the advice along the way.

Possibly useful info

Years ago, I swapped a 904 torqueflite in my 70 duster. Same trans just swapped in one that worked.
This car had kickdown linkage. The trans that was in the car had a shorter lever than the one I was swapping in.

I used the short lever with the trans going in, having removed it's longer lever.
After I got done, the trans would upshift through it's gears to drive within 20 yards of initial movement.

A B+M shifter helped me hold each gear longer, & I figured someone put the wrong weights in the tailshaft.

About a year later I sheared the planet carrier bell from it's center during a jackrabbit start. After much discussion with the rebuilder, I found the reason for the rapid upshifting.

I swapped the longer lever back on & it was perfect!

I reused the original TV lever that was on the trans. I also used a Lokar kickdown cable and everything else was pretty much custom. I think I've got it working OK now. It even shifts a lot firmer when going into 2nd. Thanks for the info.
