I've been having some tranny problems here lately. I broke the tail housing off of my first Trans due to an incorrectly supported NP205. I replaced this Trans with a used unit and it seemed to work fine. I drove it around a little bit it seemed to do just fine. I took it out for a spin and the Trans just stopped working. It was like the Trans started slipping for just a second and then I had nothing.....in any gear. I could shut the truck off for a few seconds and then crank it back and it would usually move again but not for very long at a time. When the Trans is working it feels like all is well......Then the same problem reoccurs.
I dropped the pan and the filter was nasty. I thought the valve body might have been bad so I changed it out with a known good one and put everything back together. I drove it down the road and back and it did just fine. I got in the truck today and backed out of the driveway and the problem reoccurred in the middle of the road. I couldn't get it to do shit. My neighbor couldn't push it...I got pissed and held the pedal to the floor and it started working again.
Has anyone had a similar issue? It the tranny fucked?

Sounds like its low on fluid, did you change the dirty filter out?

Yes I put a new filter in it and the fluid level is good.

I am not an expert but I have been told that air pockets in the valve body can cause this problem. I had the same problem with a 350. First just reverse quit. After I drove it and warmed it up good it has worked fine ever since. Make sure it is full of fluid. I actually had mine a little over full. Again, not an expert just putting my two cents in.

Thanks for the input man.....This trans has been pissing me off real good here lately.

I dunno then, sounded like it has air trapped in the lines,or low fluid level.

I think I'm gonna take it to Sigmon's tomorrow and let them fix it.

Has anyone on here reloacted the trans fluid filter to outside the pan? I'm thinking of doing mine this time to keep from having to replace the pan gasket and make a mess everytime.

My guess is a crapped out pump.

I've heard arguments both ways about external filter setups, but I'm not doing one for mine. a drain plug in the pan makes a world of difference in how much of a mess you'll make.

I just put a drain plug in mine the last time I had the pan off. It will make less of a mess but I will still have to replace the gasket.
I was leaning away from the posibility of a bad pump because of the problem being intermintent. Most people have told me that a bad pump doesn't usually work part of the time. I have a trans cooler line. It's the OUT line comming off the trans. It still leaks really bad still (as in still has good line pressure). I'm going to replace the fitting comming out of the trans this afternoon and I might pull the pan to check if the filter is clogged again.

I would not recommend an external filter.
"It's the OUT line coming off the trans. It still leaks really bad still (as in still has good line pressure)."
If you have a bad enough leak, it could be preventing it from building pressure
Not sure I fully understand the quoted statement, but if it is blowing fluid, it will not build the necessary pressure to engage.
