ok so i am planing on building a rig i gave a lot of full size jeep stuff laying around so this is my plan. i have a Comanche shell and a good 4.0 to start with. then i got dana 44s with 4.09 gearing in them already i am wanting some input from yall on the th400 for a off road tranny. i plan to have a four link system a dana 20 transfer case with the tara low kit in it. dose this sond like a good ideal. the reason i want auto is for like hill climbs i can gear down with out pushing in a clutch and losing wheel speed. thank you for your input.

Maybe I'm off a bit, but to me the th400 sucks up too much of your power.
Also, it'd be real easy to throw in a 32RH out of a wrangler. If you need something alittle stronger, get the AW4 from a cherokee.
Then everything is a bolt in affair!

will the dana 20 tranfer case hook up to the aw4 my axles are pass drop and they are the lowest gear set i have here, the dana 20 trasfercase is pass drop

I agree, the TH400 is not only overkill for a 4.0 but just not worth it. Not to mention it has a tall first gear, no overdrive, and can't lock the converter. Bulletproof but useless nowadays in most applications.

What size tire do you want to run? With 4.09 gears, I would think 33's are starting to really make your gearing tall.

I think Novak makes a d20 conversion for the aw4. That's the trans I'd go with. Might be worth looking into a d300 or np208/231/241. The jeep alum cases will driver drop, but with a mix of chevy/jeep parts you could get a pass drop case.

Aw4 will need a tcm or standalone shifter/control but worth the money

well i was going to go to a taller gear in the axle later on when i can aford it and i was going with probly 35 to 37 tall tires when i can find a good deal on good used ones i looked out there and and i have a aw4 but i still need to find out if i can can bolt a dana 20 to it or if i need a adapter kit for it i cant seem to find the bolt paterns so what i am goin to do tomaro is find one laying in the yard and put the two together and find out.

where would i get the clock ring at i am sorry for the dumb questions but thats the only way to learn you know what i mean

thank you i will see if i hace a 300 any where. 70 bucks is alot better then 700 at novack

well i got a 300 and it looks like it will bolt up for pass drop if i shave the brakit off am i looking at it right

thats a great offer but i got all the stuff here but a clocking ring and i dont have that kind of money. i found out today that the aw4 will bolt up to the 300 i just need a spacer which i guess is the 7/8 ring.

ok so i put the dana 300 up to the aw4 and there is like a inch and half gap so the 7/8 ringis not thick enough is this right or am not seeing somthing
