Figured I was having a similar issue about noises coming from underneath. I finally got an exhaust put on (from the cat back, simple straight pipe w/ glass pack) and now with the reduced noise I can hear this popping noise. Was able to get underneath while it was running and listen and it sounds like my catalytic converter is making some loud ass popcorn off and on. I thought it might have been clutch related at first (after my bad experiences with clutch/trans issues on my other truck its always my first thought), but after listening as close (when I noticed it was going on even sitting still) as I would bring myself to the cat I am thinking that is the culprit. So is my guess that the honeycomb substance in the catalytic converter is going south fairly accurate? Any opinions/thoughts welcome.

Backfire maybe? I have a flowmaster on mine. I only really get the popping when gearing down. Never thought anything of it.

It started off some what minor during driving after the exhaust pipe/glass pack install, then I stopped at a gas station and the truck sat for about 45 minutes. As soon as I started it back up there was a large amount of the popping, then it went back to minimal, then to none after about 5 minutes of driving. It does seem like there is a slight power loss at higher RPMs as I am getting ready to shift (5 spd manual). But its hard to tell if it is just the heavier 33" Bias Ply TSLs that I don't usually run robbing power, or if it is more engine related.

Before I noticed it was going on when stationary also a friend that is a mechanic suggested maybe it was ball joint related. After tugging on the tire there is some looseness in the ball joint on the passengers side (side the cat is located on), but it wouldn't explain the popping when stationary. Thanks for the opinions/ideas so far, keep them coming and I will answer any more detailed questions that I can.

most liely a catalytic converter with the inards coming loose.

nah its the heat sheild on the catalytic converter thats what happened to my xj and i just put a wood screw through the heat sheild into to cat and it stoped
