Hello, I have a 1989 wrangler 2.5 5sp ax5 and want to up grade. what would be the best way? would a wrecked or used cherokee witha 4.0 5sp? what year? thanks for your time if you can help me know the way to go:confused:

I agree with BWB, best way is sometimes different for different folks. In your case, you are going to need a different transmission and a different transfer case with any motor you swap in. Now, try to decide exactly what you want to do with your rig. The GM 350 is sure an easy swap and they are plentiful but the power there will tend to break parts such as axle shafts, ujoints, etc. The 4.0 is a good choice as a reliable engine but the GM 4.3 will have more power. With proper gearing and tire size, the 2.5L you have can provide as much power off road as you need and is light weight and economical. You are at the beginning of a fun trip but let's decide where you are going before you start :)

I,m fairly happy with what i have, it's just i hear the ax5 is sooo weak. is it really that bad? thanks for your time...

The AX5 is not weak for the 4 cylinder. But if you swap to a different engine, you will want to swap to a different tranny.
