The Garden Thread

Do you run a coop with shavings or anything like a pen? Our has roosting poles and shavings. It still becomes a necessity. Can't say it's really gross or enjoyable but it and the shavings go into the compost.
Be sure it matures a good bit. It will be too strong for most plants.
1 coop has shavings we typically throw in a yard cart/wagon when changed out so that may be an option

48 Everbearing strawberry plants in the new planter. Plants came from my parents that they were able to split/divide. Supposedly you can split them each year and double the amount of plants.

You can clip the runners list to create new plants. Planters like that can dry out quick if you don't keep then watered.

Wife hauled in her soft neck garlic planted last year. Also some over wintered onions.
FB_IMG_1716855648724.jpg

We have probably 100 more onions set out earlier this year coming along and all her hard neck garlic yet to harvest.
Planted 53 maters, 8 squash, 8 zucchini, 16 cucumbers today. All seedlings started in our grow station.
We got 24 yum yum peppers, 18 green peppers, and 8 jalapeno plants to set yet. We're gonna do beans, corn, and sweet taters afterward.
Our small red potatoes and Irish are all ready in the ground.
Garden plot has been so wet we are behind.

Man my plants are pissed off. We had been hardening off for weeks. But putting them in the grounds has them looking horrible. Hope we don't have to start over with a lot of them. Maters look good compared to the rest.
Got all the pepper varieties in last night.

2 weeks late getting ready to plant. The ground has just been too wet. Finally got it in shape to plant and just in time, more rain coming this week. Slim Shady the resident Racer came by too.

I love trees though. Like, might give one a hug.

This dogwood is special. My oldest son and I dug it up from the edge of the woods at our old house when he was 2. It sat in a pot completely neglected with 3 or 4 others while my youngest son was sick in the hospital for two months. It was the only survivor that made it to the new house. It was maybe 18" when we planted it. It's over 5' now.

I planted these 7 pecans the spring after we moved in. They were 4' tall sticks then. This is they're 4yrs old and 7'+. I got a handful of pecans off of them last year. I'll have enough for a pie in a few years 🤣

This crepe myrtle is special because it came of a tree at my great grandparents farm. It looked a lot better last year but the Japanese beetles were eating it up, so I sprayed it. Bad move. I inadvertently killed the ladybugs and the aphids ate it slam up, along with powdery mildew. I thought it was dead but as you see, it mostly came back. I'm going to leave it alone this year.

This water oak I dug up when I put iny carport shelter. Our property was logged probably 30 or 40yrs ago and most of my woods are poplar and pines. Not many oaks. I couldn't get rid of one of the few mast producing trees I had so I transplanted it. It's probably too close to the house, but that'll be the next guys problem. It was 5' tall when I moved it. It's 8'+ now. Water oaks aren't great landscape trees, but it's from here so it'll be here until it falls over.

I also really like to hunt and watch wildlife. My sunflowers are coming up great. (Lightgreen in the field.) Hopefully the boys and I can knock down a few dove over it this year.

My corn got eat up by the squirrels and turkeys so I replanted this streak with quail plot mix from the local (formally) quail unlimited chapter. Looked like a lot of soybeans in the mix, but whatever, it's coming up well.

My garden is doing ok. All of our plants are ones my wife's students started from seeds so we always get some surprises. High school kids don't always label things well. This spot doesnt get the best sun so it's always slow to get going.

JoCo sand, I sorta miss it….

Our coop has shavings in it. We change it out typically once a week and dump it into our compost pit. We then shovel the shavings/poop into the garden and water it in. Works really well and little to no mess.

36 manually driven tee post today. My shoulders are not going to like me in the morning.

Gonna see what happens when you try using a PTO auger with an 8 inch but behind a 1945 model tractor tomorrow.

Well the posthole digger ran well with the 2n. Bit sketchy on the slow lift and non live PTO. Maybe sketchier with the wife on the tractor and me trying guide the auger and give some down pressure via a long pry bar, lol.......now this is same women who tried to run me over with it because she did know the first clue about it and panicked pushing the clutch for a brake pedal.😜

We set corner post made of telephone poles. The auger hole has to have some love to except them. The yellow tractor became a pile drive by dropping the heavy fork frame down on the post by pushing the lift into float. I got I'll and needed more Thor so I strapped a 8 foot telephone butt to the frame and kept pounding.

Now the best part. All that banging and jarring with the clutch in all sorts of positions broke the PTO clutch free! 😍😍😍That thing has been adjusted seven ways and loaded all sorts of ways with the bush hog to break it free.....turns out I just needed to use the tractor as a hammer.

Wife brought in some goods too.

Corn, squash, cucumbers, and maters are doing great. Beans, well they aren't faring too well. Yes, I need to weed the garden lol. Been working on it. Last year I'll plant where I can't just run the tractor through lol.

I planted my garden and every single plant died. In an effort to boost growth I fertilized the plants as I was planting them and it was way more then they could handle  I tilled the whole garden again and re-planted everything, so I am a few weeks behind where I should. Everything is doing well now. Zucchini, cucumbers, bell peppers, jalapeños and tomatoes all coming on strong. I did not plant any green beans this year since the deer ate most all of them last year.

I like the chain link trellis!

I like the chain link trellis!
Takes 15 minutes to put it up. When done, takes 15 minutes to take it down, lay post on fence and roll it up and ready for the next year. It is a lot easier to find and pick the cucumbers too!
Tilled weeds and added some water this evening.

I like to live dangerously. Ill hoe around (hehe) the plants about 6 or 8" and then carefully roundup the rest. I haven't killed anything I care about yet.

I too like to live dangerously.

I use some Glyphosate in the garden too.

I was actually spraying the drive, trees, side walk, around buildings and looked over at the garden and started thinking, hmm if I stay away from the plants. But then I thought, hey dumbass, you have already replanted everything once this year, and decided to pass.

I've heard of folks building a nozzle/funnel around the tip of the sprayer to focus the spray

Cut off the top of a 20oz drink bottle taped to the nozzle works well for the old style nozzles. The new selectable roundup brand sprayers work really well in the fan pattern. It's a nice sharp pattern.

Looking good.
