Yea, I saw a photo of the S-curves area as you head into Mirlo Beach / Rodanthe. We've been vacationing there for two weeks each year for the past 10 years. I was just totally blown away at what the water had done. Road was totally gone and there was a new inlet there between ocean and sound. Amazing what a Cat 1 storm can do.

Thanks for posting the links, Anthony. Glad to hear you are doing ok.

Definitely amazing what these storms can do... we got married at Duck the Saturday before Isabel came through and did the same thing farther north.

The problem with this is the number of people that is cut off, during Isabel it was only Hatteras Village, its the entire Hatteras Island now. Also, the bridge (Bonner Bridge) is being inspected now and no news as of yet of damage.

Duck and north is actually closed as of now. They had some bad erosion on 12 from the sound side. They are planning as of now to re open at 10AM tomorrow. The problem is they, the county, has already started letting people in to the county and they (the visitors) are expecting everything to be OK, its crazy.

The area at the S-curve looks to be an easy fix compared to where the new inlet has formed a few miles past the Bonner Bridge on Pea Island... I also heard some crazy talk that the Perdue said the OBX would be open by Labor Day... LOL good luck w/ that...

Quit dredging Oregon Inlet and let the new one form... build the bridge over it... You'll never win fighting nature...

Check out these two photos and compare. There is bit of a size diffrence, also Oregon Inlet is at 26 feet depth, and the new one is about 10.

Yeah, however Oregon Inlet would fill in at an insanely rapid rate... that's basically now a man made inlet (naturally formed a long time ago) but they keep fighting to keep open.. The other would open up rapidly to it's natural size and would not require dredging... that's just how it works...

Oregon Inlet is no where near 26 feet deep either... More like 6-8 feet at best..

EDIT: and now that a new bridge is potentially in the works (Bonner is about to fall apart) for the area... i'm guessing they'll highly consider that option.. they're wasting tons and tons of tax payer dollars to keep that inlet open and it's almost too shallow for even the charter fleets to safely make it out...

Good article... I say demo that huge bridge and build a new smaller one a few miles south...

it was 6 to 8 feet a few months ago, its no allot deeper, but not as deep as it was last week. There has been a dredge sitting there for two months dredging out the channel.

Also, do you live here? no.....

Ok well you're right... my only recommendation is do a few google searches... what does living there have to do with anything though? You own a fishing vessel and take it under the bonner bridge daily?

There has been a dregde sitting there for probably 10 years... or actually longer...

Really.... I do live here, and I believe real life over GOOGLE. Sorry about that, I'm not going to Google something that's in front of me. I do not own a vessel, but family and friends work in the commercial fishing business. I;m sure they are telling me more accurate information than Google can keep updating. If you told me the Shit was 3 feet deep in your yard I would believe you, I wouldn't correct you and tell you "no its only 2 and a half, I googled it"

On another Note; Dare County has opened the flood gates with visitors. Duck isn't passable yet, and Hatteras Island is closed to everyone.

There are people living in shelters because they have lots EVERYTHING, and the tourists are going to the locations giving out water and ice for the ones that need it and taking it for themselves. Its pathetic whats going on right now, I have been listening to the police and there has already been fights over tourists being here. Businesses (A/C, electric, and plumbing) have been working on rental houses over peoples personal houses.

Its pathetic.

Heard anything about Portsmouth Island or that area?

Wow, that's just... sad.
I'm sure you know better than anyone - I assume this decision is in part b/c of the fact that tourism is a major part of the local economy, and having people there to spend $$ is better than turning $$ away. However clearly the $$ right now is less important than getting people out of your hair.

PI got it pretty bad too. Seems like a lot of the dunes are washed away, and the beach side is much smaller now. (from what I can tell from pictures)
