The Ranlo New Years Explosion

Anybody else remember when the guy detonated some huge explosive in Ranlo on New Years back in the late 90's?

Heard something blow up down the road tonight, and it prompted my memory, so I wanted to tell the wife about it, cuz she ain't from around here.
 
yea I remember...also sunday will be two weeks ago we had an explosion around clayton as well. It shook the hous and every where else also. It was on the news but no one knows what it was.
 
I remember, and for the right price could probably put a couple names to the incident:popcorn:
 
I HEARD it was a condom filled with acetylene.Placed inside a paper bag and ignited.Gaston County residents would never condone this type of activity!:flipoff2::shaking:

I don't need any names, I was just looking for more info, like what year it was, or what it was that blew up?

I can't imagine that you could fit enough acetylene in the worlds largest condom to make that much of an explosion. IIRC the crater was 15 feet wide and probably 60 feet long. It was behind the lady who used to cut my hair's house.
 
Hard to believe that the details of the only interesting thing to happen in Ranlo in it's history have just disappeared. I'm suspecting gubment coverup.

The President visited there, I believe it was in '96-around the same time of the explosion. It was some grown adults messing around. They weren't expecting that kind of explosion:lol: I WAS IN NO WAY INVOLVED IN IT!

I was living there at that time, renting a house not far from where the president stopped. Had to have been in 93 or 94 since I only lived there for a year or so.

Ok, I don't know about that, it is at least getting close to debatable. The shook my house and set off car alarms and we are about 5 miles away on the OTHER side of spencer mountain.
