I figure by the time I get finished designing it, I will actually be able to afford to build it :lol:. Got a set of wheels and tires so far:

I still need some side-lugs though. Everyone knows you can't make it anywhere past the mall parking lot without side-lugs! :flipoff2:

More to come as I have time to do it...

Edit: Plans include using my Toyota drivetrain in a small 2-seater. I am reading (and have read) numerous buggy builds for ideas and what to do/not do. I'm open to ideas and want to learn from other's experiences.
 
I went the same route. Its funny to see how much it will actually be different even though you have it all modeled.

Modeling the cage and being able to design it visually really was a big help though.

I hope that by doing it in the virtual world I can avoid any major hiccups. I'm sure there will be minor changes during the actual build. It's a lot easier to change a virtual tube than a real one!

Do you have a screen shot of your model vs what you built?

There are quite a few differences with the cage like the way the seats tie in, the way it ties into the frame, bpillar bracing next to the seat...etc.

The tub was very close...it was hand made.

Looks good! I like the way your A-pillar goes into the center of the cage instead of the typical hoop. Did you use weldments for the tube or sweeps? I am thinking I will do individual weldments and put them together in an assembly.

3D sketch and sweep the tube xsection along the sketch. If you'd like the Solidworks 2010 Bible I've got it in digital form. Excellent book that will teach you everything. Thnx for the complements.

Solidworks 2010. Its ballpark $3k / license for the basic. Mine is pirated.:eek:

Had I known what I know now and had more money I would have bought a better tub. I don't regret making it though. Learned a lot of skills from doing it that way and was able to customize it (more leg room, seats further back, deeper wheel wells, etc...)

I'm not going to bother too much with the holes and tiny details...they won't matter in the grand scheme of things and I don't want to spend hours modeling them :rolleyes:

that looks awesome. heck it even shine's the axle up for ya? nice:) the software to do this kinda thing is $3k??? as in $3,000?? wow. i thought it was like $200 tops fro the best lol.

LOL SW gets kinda silly, you can run that program way of $20k with fluid dynamics etc.....

Nice work!

Oh and don't feel bad...ours is pirated too.... shhhh

Something you might consider is paying someone to model/draw things for you. If you've got some napkin sketches and want some nice technical drawings, it would probably be pretty inexpensive.

Oh yeah, you can change the lighting conditions and everything imaginable. That finish is the "black spray paint", I can make it a car-paint shine or powdercoat or whatever.

Very true! That $4K doesn't even include any of the add-ons like the fluid dynamics or advanced FEA stuff! They even have an add-on to analyze the environmental-friendliness of your design. :rolleyes:
