I have a TH-350 in my crawler, that keeps blowing fluid out the vent. I do not have a plastic vent tube on it. It is just the hole in the side of the housing. I have an external Deral fan cooler on it also. When the tranny temp gets warm it will blow it out the hole on to my exaust an smoke like crazy. Has even flamed up before. I run a Autometer guage in my trans pan an it has never got over 210 deg. I thought it was over full. But have checked it an was accually a little low. What could be the cause of this? An where can I get a fitting to go in the vent hole an run it up my fire wall to get it up higher? Thanks for the help.
It has a 2500 stall with a TCI reverse manual valve body, I was running a 1800-2000 an it was still doing the same thing

you can tap the hole with a 1/8 pipe plug tap and screw a brass fitting in it.
at 210 it shouldn't be boiling the fluid, the reason it comes out is as everything inside spins, it atomizes the fluid making it a vapor, when the vapor hits oxygen it turns back into fluid. if running the vent up to the firewall doesn't cure the problem, there has to be something wrong inside (first thought is a pump gasket problem)

Thanks for the info. I will try the tube up the fire wall first. Then if that doesnt fix it, then will go inside. Thanks again

I'm with Lee on this one, I run a cooks transmission T-350 in my crawler. I have a gauge, but, no sending unit yet. So, no idea what my temps run. I have forgot to turn the fan on a few times, done some major climbing, and no puke. As far as that goes, it has never puked, ever. I am thinking that there is something wrong inside. unless.... Where is your temp sending unit placed to get your temp reading? It may be getting hotter than you think. Also, when does it puke? in high range? low range? all the time?

Same here, I measure my temp in the pan and Ive got to 240 and never puked...

Hey Chip. I run an after market Pan that holds 2 extra quarts, The pan has has a bung in the side of it, thats where my sensor is. It doesnt matter high or low range when It gets to 180 or so it will spit fluid out the vent hole. It doesnt blow it out like its under pressure, it just kind of runs out the hole with what looks like bubbles in it. I also run a Derale cooler with a 600cfm fan built in to it.

Didn't think about that Lee, I run Hydraulic fluid in mine, per the builders recommendation. A friend of mine, also has had no issues, builder unknown, he runs Amsoil in his.

after you run it for a little while, pull the dipstick and see it has bubbles on the end, if it does the fluid is foaming. that is one issue with running hydraulic fluid, it doesn't have the anti-foaming properties of atf.
How can I get the Hydrolic fluid out of it? What else would I need to do besides drain it? Torque converter etc?

To get all the fluid out, and replace it with something else, you need to take it somewhere that has a transmission flush machine. This machine will either pull fluid from the pan, and replace it with new fluid, then allow it to circulate and continue to do this till all fluid is out, or it will connect in line, and do the same thing. I have had both types of machines used on my vehicles, and both did the job well.
Still though, I like the fluid I use in my tranny, and as far as that goes, I also use it in my power steering as well, Full hydraulic. And as said, never had an issue with it pushing out. IIRC what I use is Castrol Blue ISO aw46, I only know to get it through O'Rielys auto parts. You have to order it in next day as they don't carry it on the shelf. IIRC it is ~$55-$60 for a 5 gallon bucket.
Now sure of the difference between what you use or what I use, as they grade Hydro fluids a little different than motor oil. You may be too thick, or too thin. David Minton, Also a RC member, at Minton's automotive in Granite Falls, is who has done my flushes in the past.

there is also an anti-foaming additive you can put in there.
i'm not saying the fluid is the problem, it's just that sometimes we overlook the simple things.

i meant to answer this last night, but i had a few too many percosets to think clearly.
