thick cut gears VS regular?

thick gears allow you to regear without changing the carrier. For example (I'm not familiar with the D60 numbers, and I dont feel like looking it up) say you have a 3.54 carrier and want to go 4.56. The 4.56 pinion gear will be a lot smaller than the 3.54, so the ring gear has to move closer to center to mesh with it. Instead of making the ring gear thicker, the OEM axle manufacturers make a different carrier for lower (higher numbers) gears that moves the ring gear. You may have heard the term carrier break; this is the gear ratio where the different carrie is used.

The aftermarket makes thick ring gears for popular ratios so you don't have change carrriers.
