im new to this forum and if this thread dont belong here please forgive me.

im 17 and dying to get an ATV. preferrably a sport/racing. being a teenager i'm limited on what i can spend and what parents say is okay. any input onto what would be good as a first atv to play around with, take on trails, little mud would be great!!! remember i dont have money to burn with college coming in about 14 months. Thanks!

For a first ATV i would suggest a yamaha blaster or warrior. The blaster is small, fast, and cheap. And they have a lot of potential for upgrade. I had a built blaster that would spank a banshee and hang with my Raptor all the way through the gears. I have had all three of these and they are good fourwheelers. But the blaster is the cheapest and its good for a beginner. You could also look into and older polaris 250 but they are heavy and automatic.

blasters are ok depending on how big you are, if you're 200 lbs, a blaster is to small. I'd say a raptor 350 or honda 300/400ex.

86-89 honda 250R. one of the best built fastest 2 strokes ever built for it only being a 250. Had mine punched out and re geared. used to ice race it up north. I'd tear up anything including banshees. You can find them in the 2000 range with some decent upgrades. I know that it will be almost 20 years old, but there are not too many that are all original. They will be in good shape. That goes for almost any old machine. don't pay attention to the year so much as the shape it is in and the aftermarket stuff and rebuild.

If I were to buy a new one I'd get that new Honda 450 sport machine.

The 250R's ar great but remember we have a beginner here. No offence We dont need another kid getting a bust ass fourwheeler and going out and getting hurt or killed. Even the blaster could be too fast. I agree that for a bigger person a blaster wouldnt work but a 300ex or 400ex and the raptor 350 are still a little too much for someone that doesnt have a lot money like this kid.

Yeah I see your point, however I had mine when I was 13. (I bought it with money I saved for a birthday present to myself.) Truthfully, you can get hurt on anything if you are not careful. Only time I ever rolled mine was racing. i didn't hurt until I get hit by a bike that was behind me....ouch!

If you're going to be playing in the mud, please don't bother getting a 2-stroke. Unless you or someone close to you doesn't mind rebuilding them.

It really depends on the person and their maturity level i guess you could say. I dont want to put anyone down or anything i just think that would be an in general thing that a first tome rider shouldnt have the fastest thing. I also have had very fast fourwheelers at a young age and never wrecked them, but not everyone is the same. I say just get what you want but please be careful and WEAR A HELMET at the least.

THE HONDA RANCHERS ARE GREAT FOR EVERYTHING, TRAILS, MUD AND OVERALL FUN. i HAVE HAD 2 AND NO PROBLEMS WITH EITHER ONE OF THEM WITH LOTS OF MILES ON THEM. USED ONES ARE PRETTY REASONABLE.

Just step up and get a raptor or a yfz. Warriors and blasters are good four wheelers.....if your 12. Youll learn to ride it, so get a good one.

Yeah thats how young inexperianced riders get hurt or killed. It just happened the other day. I think it was a 14 or 15 year old riding his new, fast fourwheeler hit the road running really fast and wrecked, killing him. Like i said before some young folks have the maturity to get something like that and have fun without getting hurt, but most dont. I also understand that wrecks do happen but stupidity shouldnt. With that being said i really beleive that a new rider should get some experiance on something less powerful before they move up to a raptor or something like that.
Oh and by the way i had a blaster when i was 15 and i am willing to bet that i could outrun most of these newer fourwheelers on the track and trail and i also proved that fact a few times.

If your putting it in mud my advice is to get a shaft driven not chain driven setup. I'd opt for the 4 stroke as well. Racing 4 wheelers are nice but until you get some experience I'd opt for a smaller size utility type like the Honda recon 250 or yamaha bruin for example. It won't run as fast as a blaster or 400 ex and won't ride as nice at faster speed through the trails but they can be had cheap and are good all around.
