thinking of join the usmc

yeah dont do it,HAHA!jk its your choice!I know the economy is bad and if it gets worse I will stay in (airforce)but if you like your freedom and not being owned I wouldnt do it.It depends on what your going in for.Oh yeah if your thinking that you want to join the marines just because there suppose to be the biggest and baddest(I almost did the same thing) dont base your desicion off that.

i know several people that said if they had it to do over again there's no way in hell they would do it again, especially after being away from their families for such a long period of time being in Afghanistan for almost 2 years at a time.

I might go in as an officier if I can't get a job when I finish school.

yeah Im going back to afghanistan this summer for the 2nd time!If you want to eventually settle down and have a family its not for you(or me) thats why in a few years I would like to get out and go ahead and get married(since shes been wanting to anyway haha)!

Not a jarhead, I'm ex-Navy. You need to ask yourself "Why the marines?"
Talk to the other recruiters, see what they have to offer. I just went through this with my son. He is talking to all the recruiters (minus the Air Force) and making his decision, on his own. I will tell you I've met with the recruiters with him, and after 45 minutes, the Marine recruiter was ready to leave. He wouldn't answer my questions honestly.
Give all of the recruiters an honest chance and make your decision.

PS: If this sounds a little biased, it is, out of the three recruiters my 17 year old son talked to, the Marine recruiter is the only one that tried to stretch the truth with. I won't said he out and out lied, but it took me 45 minutes to get him to admit that he would not guarantee the job and career path that my son wanted.

i wish i had joined the marine corp before my back got all beat up and broken. one of those life long dreams that got put off til too late.

if your gonna commit to the marines, go all the way. do the reserves when you re enlist.

i feel that way about anything though. don't do anyhting half assed.

Bigred is right,if you do make that decision join up.In my opinion I cant stand reserves or guard stuff for my own reasons dealing with them.If you enlist, enlist dont go on a vacation and come back home.

i dont know much about the military but both one of my brothers has made a good career of the guard and the other was in for 6 took a break and just relisted...it has seemed to work well for both of them while keeping them close to thier fams
good luck and thanks in advance for your service

I'm not in the military nor have I been. But I have lots of family and friends who were/are in the military.

2 big things I hear from them

1- If you do it, consider doing it until retirement.

2-( most important) I'll tell you the one thing Master Sargent Art Lilly told people. Don't do it unless you are prepared to be in a combat zone. You will see combat.

Matt

why marines? go army. bonus' are up to 50,000 for only 3 years. what are you looking to do in the military?

I got out 12 years ago, and to be honest, I wish I was still in. It was a great time and it gave me the opportunity to see other parts of the world.

Thats odd to me. One of my friends from high school had the exact opposite happen to him. He graduated from UNCA and wanted to fly in the military. Out of all of the branches of service, the USMC was the only branch that would gurantee, in writing, that they will give him the opportunity to attend flight school. No other branch would do that, gave him the "we will give you the chance if you are available BS". The USMC sent him to FL and paid him his normal salary to report to the base for about 10 hours a week (mostly PT) while he waited 8 months for flight school to start up. :) Need less to say, after being in for 3 years, he now flyes helicopters for the USMC and is stationed in Camp Lejune.

However, after talking to different recruiters at different offices, what they tell you is different, even within the same branch of military. So, it could be attributed to each RO and how they do business or how they meet their quotas.

And like Rob said, talk to everyone and ask all the questions the same to each one so you can get a feel for each branch. Don't joint one branch of military "just because". If you do, you'll be sorry you did. Its a major career and life choice, choose your options wisely.

My fater in law is USMC and loves it. However, my wife and her mom and sister had a difficult life moving with him when he got transferred and when he was deployed. They would have never made it without family living close to help with support and babysitting, etc. etc.

TRC&P25, gimme a call if you have questions about anything in the Corps. I just got meritoriously promoted to Corporal on March 2nd. Theres ALOT of things that suck about it and theres ALOT of things that make it worth it. I will tell you both, and i can even hook you up to talk to some of my friends in other branches and military career pathways.

You need to ask yourself "Why the marines?"

Marines = The Few, The Proud
Coast Guard = just 3 little words D.O.T.
Army = Please :rolleyes:
Air Force = Too far to fall! (but appeared to live MUCH better than the others)
Navy = their ALL fags! Queue squid trying to explain why their CrackerJacks LACE from the back in 5...4...3...2...1

Seriously, don't base your decision on any 1 recruiter. Like it or not, their ALL "salesmen" with a quota! Talk to your locals... then drive a couple hours away and talk to them. Many times it all depends on the office. PM "InfantryYJ"... he just retired 60 days ago after 20+ years.

As BigBen & others have said, it is what you make of it. Keep an open mind and have fun... you'll have a blast. Think you're being "oppressed"? It WILL suck! Search your reasons for joining and decide.

My recruiter (played football w/ Elvin Bethea, 2 tours in Vietnam, & a zero BS guy) told me like it was 28 years ago. Without a doubt, the absolute best thing I have ever done.

Semper Fi!
