Just saw NC Senate Bill 90 from 2015 that says any vehicle made after 1970 is required to have two working stop lamps (one on each corner).
Does that mean I don't have to replace the third brake light to run a bigger tire on the rear carrier?

If I remember right from when I was am inspector, trucks and suvs don't have to worry about the third brake light but passenger cars do. Basically if it says truck on your registration then no 3rd needed.

I didn't pass a couple years back for this very reason. The inspector stated that a vehicle must have all safety items on it as it did when it left the factory. He stated the 3rd brake light fell into this category. Could be how each inspector interprets the rules/laws.

The way we were taught, is if it was on the vehicle from the factory it should be on it in working condition. Inspector judgement should be used on items such as 3rd brake lights with a few led's burnt out.

The way it was explained to me was they passed a law for a while where you only had to have one working brake light. They realized their mistake and now it says you must have one working brake light on each side.

I removed the 3'rd light on my TJ when I went to 35's, which was at least 6 years ago. I have never had an issue with annual inspections but now that I opened my damn mouth, I probably will this year.
