alternator took a crap at the flats so swapped it out sunday.got it put on and fired it up and it went to running rough and missing and would die.left the alternator on the jeep but unhooked it and run like a top.hooked it back up and same crap.it's a 88 yj 4.2 any ideas?

Believe it or not it's not that crazy. I have had alternators make vehicles run bad before. It is putting out a A/C frequncey that is interfering with the ignition system. Replace that alternator too.

does the alt spin freely by hand?

it spins fine but got hot as hell real quick.i took it back and had them check it and they said it was fine.i gave it back to them anyway and got my core back. gona get one from napa instead of autozone, they have a little better quality. i think david was on the right track about the a/c frequncey,it acted like an ignition problem.

Good luck! I went through 3 bad parts stores ones before I just had a custom new one made.

^X2 on that i bought 4 new starters from advance and the coil kept burning up at first start they kept telling me its my flexplate so i had one of the fantastic so called technicians they have there and made him crawl under my blazer to inspect himself lol i knew it wasnt plate just wanted to make em actually do some mechanic type work!!! lol

Sounds like it is time to find a good alternator shop. I haven't bought an alternator or starter in years. I just take them down to Willis Automotive in Shelby and he fixes them right. The one I have in the BlueOx is on its 3td truck I have no idea how many miles it has run. I know that it went over 200K on the WarWagon then it was on the WarBeast for about 65K.
